    About

    Why Study Chinese?
    • More people in the world speak Chinese than any other language.
    • As world's economy and political order becomes increasingly integrated. China and the U.S. share more common economic and political interests.
    • For the U.S., Chinese is a "critical-need language." It is crucial to maintaining the interests of peace and prosperity both here and abroad.
    • China and its Sinophone communities around the world are also home to one of the longest continuing civilizations. The sense of cultural identity is unbroken despite periods of war, foreign conquest and turmoil. This makes China an entryway to one of humanity's richest troves of cultural, literary and philosophical ideas, artifacts and debates.
    Opportunities

We offer courses in all levels of Chinese language, history, culture and civilization. If you want to immerse yourself in the study of China, you can major or minor in Chinese Studies.

To broaden face-to-face cultural understanding, we encourage you to study abroad in China. Our Chinese Language House gives you the chance to live and practice speaking with other Chinese students.

    How to Apply

Tell us your story. We want to learn more about who you’ve been, who you are and who you’ll become in college. Numbers will inevitably be part of your story, but we’re also interested in your ambition, your drive and your hidden talents.

William & Mary practices holistic review; decisions are not based solely on one aspect of your application. Rather, we review your essays, letters of recommendation, extracurricular involvements, and yes, those numbers like GPAs and standardized test scores. Each application is read at least twice, including once by your regional counselor. At the end of this process, our goal is to bring together a class of dynamic, diverse and academically engaged students.
