About

As a WPI civil engineering major, you'll master and apply the fundamentals and be able to specialize. Be immersed in protecting the earth's air and water, in the engineering behavior of earth materials, or in finding better ways to move people and goods. Examine the space where the natural world and the urban environment meet, or come to understand the complexities and impact the future of construction practices. Whatever your path, WPI's project-based learning approach guarantees hands-on experiences. You'll build leadership and cultivate ingenuity, typically in collaboration with industry partners and always with the support of faculty advisors.

Pursuing your BS in Civil Engineering at WPI lets you chart your own course by studying broadly or focusing your studies with these specializations: Structural and Geotechnical Environmental Transportation Urban and Environmental Planning Construction Engineering and Project Management No matter what you choose, you'll take courses across civil engineering's fields of study, like Resilient Infrastructure for a Changing Climate, Legal Aspects of Professional Practice, Soil Mechanics, and Traffic Engineering. You can also pursue your bachelor's and master's degrees concurrently with the Civil Engineering BS/MS program. Complementary Minors: Industrial Engineering Manufacturing Engineering Materials

Collaborative, team-oriented project-based learning is integral to WPI's undergraduate education and a major reason why you'll graduate to be an innovative problem-solver. In Civil Engineering, you may have projects close to home, such as mixed-use development in Worcester, or you might take your work across the globe analyzing pedestrian behavior in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour or investigating wastewater management in Fatima, Costa Rica.

Requirements

English Program Requirements

International applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency through one of the following exams:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Recommended score of 90 with no sub-score below 20
IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Recommended score of 7.0 with no band below 6.5
Duolingo English Test Recommended score of 115
PTE (Pearson’s Test of English): Recommended score of 61

WPI Undergraduate Admissions will also consider Initialview or Vericant interviews if submitted. These interviews are optional and serve as a supplement to one of the exams mentioned above, but alone they do not satisfy our English proficiency requirement.

How to Apply

Step #1: Submit Application

First year candidates: Complete your application through the Common Application. Make sure you share who you are and what makes you a fit for WPI, and check over your answers. We encourage you to review our college application timeline checklist to put your best foot forward!

Transfer candidates: Complete the WPI Transfer Application. Make sure to also review important entrance and application requirements. Additional helpful information can also be found by reviewing frequently asked questions.

No matter which type of student you are, be sure to use an email address that you check frequently when filling out your application. Keep in mind that many high schools block external emails, so we recommend using your personal email address if you have one. This email will be the main method of contact that WPI uses to reach you throughout the application process.

Step #2: Request Required Materials

Request your required high school transcripts and letters of recommendation while completing your Common Application. WPI is a test-blind institution, meaning SAT and ACT scores are not part of the WPI application. We do require:

Official transcripts sent from high school
- Transfer applicants must also submit college/university transcripts
School counselor letter of recommendation
Teacher letter of recommendation
Early Decision applicants are required to submit the Early Decision Agreement
