    About

    You will study the ancient languages of Greek and Latin attaining advanced competence in one and competence in the other complemented by the study of the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome.

    The study of Greek and Latin trains the mind to understand the nuances of language and thought in other contexts and disciplines as well and lays the groundwork for original research both in terms of process and content.

    The classics curriculum at Agnes Scott is a carefully stepped approach that helps students learn and practice skills essential both for the evaluation of ancient Greece and Rome and their persistent influence on the world around us. Classics students learn to use a wide range of compelling textual and material remains and a variety of critical methodologies from a range of disciplinesanthropology, art history, history, literary studies, philosophy, political science, sociologyto examine the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome.

  • The ability to translate texts in Greek or Latin and situate them within their literary and historical contexts
  • General knowledge of the intellectual, cultural, historical, and political developments of Greece and/or Rome and their roles in creating a globalized” society
  • The contributions of Greece or Rome to ancient and modern social constructions, especially that of race, class, and gender

    English Program Requirements

    The submission of SAT or ACT scores is optional for international applicants.  Students are welcome to submit test scores if they think they are representative of them as a student, but are not required to do so. You will have the opportunity on the Common Application supplement to tell us if you wish us to review your test scores. All students, regardless of whether or not they submit test scores, will be considered for all of our merit scholarships.

    To be a student at Agnes Scott, you must be able to proficiently communicate in English from the first day of classes. Because of this expectation, if your native language is not English, you are required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Duolingo English Test (DET), Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or provide alternative evidence of English language proficiency. Agnes Scott accepts TOEFL MyBest Score.

    While a valid TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Language Test or CAE score can satisfy Agnes Scott’s English language proficiency requirement, this requirement can also be met through the following alternatives:

    1. Your country of origin is also an English-speaking country and English is your native language. English test scores are not required of applicants from the following countries:
      • Anguilla, Antigua/Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada (Except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), the Grenadines, Guam, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica/other West Indies, Liberia, Montserrat, New Zealand, South Africa, St. Helena, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos, United Kingdom, United States
    2. You have earned at least one of the following:
      • An associate's degree from a U.S. institution of higher education meeting Agnes Scott’s English course equivalency
      • Graduation from a U.S. high school following three years of continuous enrollment.
    3. You have earned a minimum score from one of the following tests:
      • ELS Language Centers - Level 12 Certificate
      • General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Examination* - C in English Language (not English as a Second Language)
      • International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Examination* - C in English Language (not English as a Second Language)

    *Arrange to send the official examination result directly from the examination council to Agnes Scott College in a sealed envelope. If that is not possible, the official document may be attested and verified by the high school principal, headmaster, or an administrator in the U.S. Education Center in your country. Unattested photocopies or documents that have been faxed or scanned are not acceptable.

    Classics provides an excellent starting point for students interested in areas such as law, medicine, education, creative writing, history, archaeology, art, philosophy, or linguistics, among many others.

    Classics students learn to analyze a wide range of compelling textual and material remains using a variety of approaches-- anthropological, historical, and sociological methods, political theory, literary criticism and art history. Majors and minors also learn Greek and Latin with a rigor that requires close attention to detail, cross-referencing of sources, careful synthesis, and critical analysis of texts and contexts--all skills that serve them well in a wide range of fields.

    How to Apply

    Agnes Scott seeks international students who have demonstrated their academic ability through a course of study equivalent to that required of U.S. applicants. We look for motivation, maturity and integrity as shown in school records, the college application and counselor and teacher recommendations.

      • Teacher Evaluation Form (teacher invitation sent via Common App)
      • Secondary School Report and International School Supplement from counselor or school official (invitation sent via Common App)
      • Official High School Transcript in English
      • Optional: SAT or ACT scores. Test scores are optional, and you may make the choice about whether or not you would like them to be considered. If you choose to do so, you can self-report your test scores by attaching your score report to the Common Application or uploading to your admission portal.
