    Overview Comparative literature differs from other approaches to literature in that it prepares students to focus on the comparative study of national literatures. In particular, students receive training in at least two of these literatures in the original language along with comparative methodology.The Bachelor in Comparative Literature at Middlebury College offers a core course on world literature, cross-lists several literature and culture courses with other departments and programs, and encourages students to consider the many Middlebury courses on English-language literature and on world literature in the original languages and in English translation.Graduating Comparative Literature majors will gain:the ability to critically and analytically engage with texts across linguistic and cultural borders.demonstrated advanced skills in at least one non-native language and intermediate skills in another.demonstrated ability in written and oral comparative analysis close to the graduate level.familiarity with a variety of target cultures and literatures within the chosen foci of the individual student.knowledge of current comparative methodologies as well as relevant cultural and critical theories.knowledge of the relationships of literatures to the arts and sciences in a liberal arts context.the ability to engage in intercultural communication.
