Computer science can be applied in an almost endless list of fields, which cover an increasingly large range of our everyday life. As a science of systematic processing, storage and transmission of digitally represented information, computer science deals with the development of complex, artificial, i.e. manmade, systems. The programme consists of twenty-one mandatory modules. The first year serves as an orientation period during which students have the option of switching to the Media Computer Science programme (and vice versa). The programme offers profound and broad training in the scientific foundations of computer science. It includes analysis, design and implementation of data processing systems. The programme consists of six subject fields: mathematics, programming and software technology, theoretical computer science and information theory, intelligent systems, technical computer science as well as databases, and networks. Many elective courses are available and include topics for example in human-computer interaction.
