    Construction Management

    About

    The only four-year program of its kind in West Virginia, the new major in Construction Management will train tomorrow's leaders in the construction industry. Local radio station WWNR recently featured us! Listen WVU Tech's Construction Management program is the only four-year degree of its kind in West Virginia. Students are trained to be tomorrow's leaders in the construction industry to be technically competent, safety-focused, quality-centered, ethical and socially and environmentally responsible. The program provides a solid foundation in mathematics (algebra and trigonometry), physics, economics and communications. Students learn about construction methods and materials, soils and structural systems, surveying, estimating, scheduling, field and office operations, construction law, construction safety, production and building systems.

    So much more than "measure twice, cut once."


    Computer Applications for Construction

    Learn how to use spreadsheets, charts and tables for problem-solving and create the reports and presentations required for effective construction management. You'll learn about the hardware and software construction pros use to keep jobs running smoothly.

    Construction Safety & Production Systems

    Discover how to design safe, effective and reliable construction processes. Explore ways to establish access to the workface and how to create a stable workflow. Learn about concepts like continuous improvement, respect for people, elimination of waste, reducing variability and increasing plan reliability.

    Heavy Construction Practice

    This studio course will apply your construction management knowledge to heavy infrastructure projects. Project life cycle includes preconstruction, construction and closeout. You'll learn about bridges, pavements, utilities and heavy equipment applications. At the end of the course, you'll put your skills to the test with a full report and presentation.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • A cumulative 2.5 or better secondary/high school GPA (4.0 scale) 
    • College Entrance Exams- ACT or SAT - If you are applying to the School of Engineering or the School of Nursing, you are required to submit ACT or SAT exam score results. Applicants to all other academic programs do not need to submit an ACT or SAT but will be required to take a placement exam after your arrival to campus.
    • Proof of English Proficiency 

    Applicants to the Leonard C. Nelson College of Engineering, including all Engineering programs, Engineering Technology, Mathematics and Chemistry, must obtain an ACT math score of at least 19 or a SAT math score of 460 on exam taken prior to March 2016 or 510 SAT score taken March 2016 and after.

    •  A cumulative 2.0 or better college GPA (4.0 scale) 
    • 24 or more earned credit hours (Equivalent to U.S. system) 
    • Students with less than 24 hours will also have to meet the same requirements as First time freshman     
    • Proof of English Proficiency

    Construction is   the second- largest industry in the United States and is responsible for the buildings and infrastructure that are so vital to the nation's quality of life. Those with a bachelor's degree in construction management  will have excellent job prospects in this fast-growing field.  

    Professional construction managers earn excellent salaries and derive great satisfaction working in fields such as commercial and institutional building, residential construction, infrastructure (highways, bridges and dams) and industrial construction. Graduates will also be positioned to work for government agencies such as the West Virginia Department of Highways, the General Services Administration and the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
