About

A degree in data science has been in high demand for years, and WPI has taken its pioneering, well-established graduate program and adapted it for undergraduate students. The new undergraduate degree in data science will prepare students for this in-demand job (the top career field in the country, according to Glassdoor) and provide them with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to thrive. WPI is renowned for its hands-on project work experience for students, and this program is no different. Through experiential learning and courses focused on a wide range of disciplines, students pursuing a major in data science will master foundational topics, including state-of-the-art data analytic technologies like machine and deep learning, artificial intelligence, and big data. They will learn to effectively gather huge amounts of data, draw new insights from it, and formulate appropriate action plans. There is a great demand for data scientists in just about any industry, and WPI graduates will be prepared to tackle the most critical data challenges in this information age. NOTE: While the courses for the program will be available during the 2019-20 academic year, the BS degree will formally be awarded beginning in 2020-21.

The degree in data science is interdisciplinary, meaning that in addition to core classes in analysis techniques, computing, mathematical sciences, and business, students take classes in advanced topics such as visual analytics, machine learning, statistics, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and big data management. You have the freedom and flexibility to do a deep dive and focus more of your coursework and projects on particular applicationsfrom social media to Internet of things data problemscustomizing your education where you can discover and follow your passion.

Requirements

English Program Requirements

International applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency through one of the following exams:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Recommended score of 90 with no sub-score below 20
IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Recommended score of 7.0 with no band below 6.5
Duolingo English Test Recommended score of 115
PTE (Pearson’s Test of English): Recommended score of 61

WPI Undergraduate Admissions will also consider Initialview or Vericant interviews if submitted. These interviews are optional and serve as a supplement to one of the exams mentioned above, but alone they do not satisfy our English proficiency requirement.

Step #1: Submit Application

First year candidates: Complete your application through the Common Application. Make sure you share who you are and what makes you a fit for WPI, and check over your answers. We encourage you to review our college application timeline checklist to put your best foot forward!

Transfer candidates: Complete the WPI Transfer Application. Make sure to also review important entrance and application requirements. Additional helpful information can also be found by reviewing frequently asked questions.

No matter which type of student you are, be sure to use an email address that you check frequently when filling out your application. Keep in mind that many high schools block external emails, so we recommend using your personal email address if you have one. This email will be the main method of contact that WPI uses to reach you throughout the application process.

Step #2: Request Required Materials

Request your required high school transcripts and letters of recommendation while completing your Common Application. WPI is a test-blind institution, meaning SAT and ACT scores are not part of the WPI application. We do require:

Official transcripts sent from high school
- Transfer applicants must also submit college/university transcripts
School counselor letter of recommendation
Teacher letter of recommendation
Early Decision applicants are required to submit the Early Decision Agreement
