A minimum of three years and a maximum of four years (full-time equivalent), this degree is awarded on the basis of an externally examined thesis of no less than 20,000 words, plus a studio portfolio examined by exhibition.

Entry Requirements
To qualify for admission as a candidate to a Higher Degree by Research course, applicants must:
- possess a degree that is the equivalent to an AQF Bachelor degree with Honours with first class or second class, first division, for entry to a PhD or at least third class honours for entry to a Masters by Research, or
- possess a Masters degree with a relevant research component that is equivalent to a Masters degree from Federation University and an equivalent result as outlined above, or
- submit other evidence of relevant qualifications and experience, or research experience, to confirm that the applicant possesses a level of relevant research experience and capacity equivalent to an award in either point above, and atisfy such additional requirements for admission to a PhD candidature, if any, as may be prescribed by the Graduate Research School Board.

English Program Requirements
Federation University accepts a variety of English language tests as proof of English proficiency. English proficiency assessment should be made using an external English test (Academic IELTS or equivalent) with the results determining whether the student can enter into our programs directly or via an appropriate English program.
From 1 July 2016 direct entry without an external English test will be only permitted when student meets the English exemption requirements described on the Federation English language requirements page as per the Simplified Student Visa Framework’s English requirements.

Career opportunities are available within the Visual Arts industry sector as professionals in the chosen field of expertise. Additionally, related fields such as public and commercial gallery curating, teaching and arts administration may also be available.
A PhD is a transferrable qualification that has application (depending on the nature of the research) to government, industry, commerce and independent research centre employment.

Formally request credit transfer when you apply. Eligibility for credit can only be assessed when full documentation has been provided. Credit must be approved in writing before you enrol, otherwise, you may not receive the credit. Applicants should not send original documents, as they will not be returned. Please note: Documents that are not in English need to be officially translated and submitted along with the copies in the original language.
