    Earth Science Composite Teaching

    About

    Earth science is a group of scientific areas that involve the study of earth and other planets: geology (the science of the earth), meteorology (the science of the atmosphere), oceanography (the science of the oceans), and astronomy (the science of the universe). If you want to expand your knowledge of our planet and pass this information onto others, consider the University of Utahs Earth Sciences Teaching Composite major. The program meets state requirements for Earth Science, Integrated Science, and Physical Science teaching endorsements and provides students with the knowledge and skills to teach Earth Science, Physical Science, and Integrated Science. The program curriculum includes core courses in the earth sciencessuch as earth systems, geological disasters, and local geologyas well as allied science courses (in chemistry, physics, and math). Students may even obtain a secondary education-teaching license by completing required courses in consultation with an advisor. The program will also enhance your math, chemistry, physics, and biology skills, well-preparing you for a rewarding career in earth sciences education.

    *New Admissions Criteria: The University of Utah is Test Optional for freshman applications for Fall 2022 admission. ACT/SAT scores are not required for admission, merit scholarships (including department scholarships), or direct admission programs (including Engineering). Freshman applications to the University of Utah for Fall 2022 will be evaluated using a holistic review process that takes into consideration factors such as a student’s high school GPA, course rigor, etc. To find out more click here.

    Students admitted prior to high school graduation must complete their senior year satisfactorily and have a final high school transcript sent for review. Likelihood of admission may also depend on the quality of the applicant pool and University enrollment goals.

    If you do not meet the above requirements, it is likely you will not be admitted. Consider attending another regionally accredited college or university and reapply after you have 30 semester or 45 quarter transferable credits with at least a 2.6 GPA.

    Some applicants not meeting the admission standards may be considered for admission on an exception basis if their special talents or diversity enhances the institution's life and character.

    Career

    With a composite degree in Earth Sciences Teaching, students are prepared to be elementary and secondary education teachers. Stay in Utah and continue to learn more about the geology of the state as a local educator, or relocate to other geophysical areas to teach (and learn) further. Students can also pursue careers as geologists, surveyors, meteorologists, or geographers. With additional education, you can also find work as a principal or school administrator, professor, researcher, or astronomer.

    How to Apply

    Apply for admission by submitting the Common Application. Be sure to fill out the application completely, as it will be used to determine admissibility. Once an application has been started, you will be able to save and continue at any time until submitted. After you have submitted your application, changes cannot be made.     Required Documents

    - Transcripts (mark sheets, school records, grades) for secondary school (9-12). Official English translations must be provided if the transcripts are only in the native language.

    - We require official transcripts. We will however accept unofficial copies of transcripts for any schools outside of the U.S. to complete your application. Please note that we will require official copies of your transcripts should you be admitted. Unofficial transcripts can be sent to us directly at [email protected]

    - Before starting classes at the University of Utah, students must submit an official copy of their secondary school transcript and proof of graduation directly to the Office of Admissions.

    - If you have taken the GED exam in place of a high school diploma, please have your official GED scores sent directly from the GED website.

    - Official printed transcripts can be dropped off in a closed envelope sealed with adhesive at the International Admissions service window in the Student Services Building (SSB) or mailed to:
