    Overview Studies in English enrich your enjoyment and understanding of all forms of literature. In the English program from University of Winnipeg  you will read a wide variety of texts, study the English language, and investigate and practice the process of writing. You will be asked to consider questions such as how culture, gender, ethnicity, race, social class, and/or historical context affect the texts you read.   The English Department offers courses in literary periods that range from classic to contemporary, focusing on writers from Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare to Carol Shields and Tomson Highway. The department also offers courses in historical periods, genres, children’s literature, women and literature, popular literature, gay and lesbian literature, creative writing, language and linguistics.This program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree (3-year, 4-year, or Honours) with a Major in English. The 4-Year BA offers students three areas of specialization: Creative Writing; Young People’s Texts and Cultures; and Screen and Cultural Studies.Sample CareersStudents of English develop excellent analytic, reading, and writing skills, which are assets in almost any career. Critical readers and writers are required in many professions, including business, law, medicine, politics, and public service. More directly, the study of English leads to careers in teaching or to careers that involve writing and research, including advertising, journalism, publishing, and public relations.

    1American High School Curriculum -  Complete grade 12 with a minimum high school average of C+ or better on a minimum of 5 academic subjects.British Patterned Education - General Certificate of Education, with two subjects at Advanced Level and three at Ordinary Level, or three subjects at Advanced Level and one at the Ordinary Level. Secondary School Grade: C (with no mark below a D)International Baccalaureate – An IB diploma with 3 HL courses and 3 SL courses.  For transfer credit or advanced standing, no grade below 4 accepted.Minimum points required: 24Minimum total score of 24 points Students will still need to meet the English Language Requirements of the university. The admissions office has expanded the requirements to include the Duolingo English Test as an approved form of meeting English proficiency for September 2020 and January 2021. The required score will be a minimum of 115 on the test.
