    About

    The program offers postgraduate training in writing as a preparation for creative and professional practice and/or advanced study. The program fosters skills needed for work as a creative writer, social commentator or narrative journalist and for careers in speech writing, public advocacy, information and media communication.

    You will gain certified expertise in the theory and practice of creative writing and be introduced to the international cross-currents of writing and information publishing industries. You will develop the techniques of creative and professional written expression, learn concepts and methods in creative research and gain the foundations for advanced study in writing and related fields.

    Entry Requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Creative and Professional Writing, applicants must:

    • hold a bachelor degree or higher from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing).

    From 2025:

    To be eligible for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Creative and Professional Writing, applicants must:

    • hold a bachelor degree or higher from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) OR have completed a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience which demonstrates the use of professional or creative writing skills.

    Note: Degrees from overseas institutions must be assessed as equivalent to a recognised Australian bachelor-level degree.

    English Program Requirements

    English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows:

    English test results must be no more than two years old.

    International students who successfully complete the Direct Entry Program (DEP) will satisfy the English Language requirements for this Griffith degree.

    The Direct Entry Program (DEP) is not available for Domestic students.

    Applicants should refer to the English language requirements section of the following University procedure for exceptions to these overall requirements:

    If you do not meet the University's specified English language requirements, you may wish to contact the Griffith English Language Institute to increase your eligibility for entering a Griffith University program. This Institute offers a number of English language and other courses at both its Brisbane and Gold Coast branches.

    Career

    This program will prepare you for work in professions where skills in creative and professional writing are required, such as publishing, professional communication, advertising, public relations and the media.

    If you're interested in authoring fiction, biography, social history and/or poetry, this program will help build your confidence in writing and open opportunities to a range of careers, in publishing, journalism, media and PR, education, policy making and information communication.

    4. Prepare supporting documentation

    • a certified* copy of your academic results (translated into English if applicable)

    • a certified* copy of your English test results (if available) and

    • if you are applying for a music or visual arts degree you may need to submit a portfolio of work, or audition (see individual program for details)
