    Across government, corporate and community sectors, there is increasing awareness of the need for skilled communicators. The Graduate Certificate in Strategic Communication is an intensive study option designed to develop your professional knowledge and practical skills and provide you with a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving media environment.

    The Graduate Certificate in Strategic Communication aims to produce independent and entrepreneurial communicators. Designed for those wanting to promote and implement change across a range of social, environmental, political and business settings, the course helps you to develop advanced analytical skills and professional-level communication expertise. You will develop knowledge of the strategic and political communication fields and media industries, and produce and engage with traditional and emergent media platforms and practices.

    You will be taught by leading researchers and lecturers, who possess a broad range of industry experience in a state-of-the-art contemporary Media School supported by equipment and technical know-how. The course is ideal for students seeking the benefits of online learning and intensive workshops and seminars. Taught over six months, this specially-designed four-unit course ensures that the study workload allows students to continue working full-time.

    The Graduate Certificate of Communication is also an articulation pathway into the Graduate Diploma of Strategic Communication and the Master of Strategic Communication.

    The course addresses the central role of environmental planning in achieving environmental, social and economic sustainability. Essential planning theory is integrated with understandings drawn from biophysical, social, cultural, legal and public policy disciplines. Urban, regional and rural environments are considered, and emphasis is given to planning across all land tenures at catchment and landscape scales. Extensive use of case studies provides students with practical examples of major environmental planning issues.


    Teaching of units within the course is linked to an active staff and graduate student research program, and with staff involvements in community, government and industry planning activities. Students undertake an industry placement that provides an opportunity to incorporate the knowledge gained in the course into planning practice.

    Entry Requirements

    Admission to most postgraduate coursework courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer.

    English Language Requirements

    For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided.     Course Specific Requirements

    Entry into the Graduate Certificate requires a bachelor's degree with a credit average in any discipline, or work experience of at least three years in journalism, public relations, event management, and/or the related professions.

    English Program Requirements

    • All methods of meeting University of Tasmania English language requirements have a validity period of 2 years unless involving a country specific qualification as listed below.
    • Each course offered by the University of Tasmania has a minimum English language requirement for entry as listed below. Applicants must also meet the academic entry requirements for each course.
    • Applicants who qualify from a University of Tasmania program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency's English language registration standard.
    • In exceptional circumstances or cases not covered by the categories outlined below, multiple forms of evidence may be considered on a case by case basis by the Executive Director, Student Operations in consultation with the Director, Academic Quality and Standards.
    • The University reserves the right to require that any applicant be required to undergo a test of English language.
