    About

This program emphasizes an interdisciplinary understanding of various aspects of human behavioral development and the contexts in which they take place across the lifespan. The program has a tripartite emphasis: to incorporate study of the biological, cognitive, and social-emotional developmental domains; to organize the study of human development across the lifespan from conception to death; and to emphasize the context within which human development takes place. Upon completion of the foundation provided by core coursework, students can choose an area of specialization from one of five focuses: biological; cognitive; socio-emotional; family, culture, and society; or research methodology. Within their focal area students may also choose to emphasize a life-cycle phase, e.g., infancy and early childhood; middle childhood and adolescence; or adulthood and aging. Affiliated faculty members are from anthropology, education, human and community development, nutrition, pediatrics, and psychology. They are also members of a number of research centers on campus including the MIND Institute, the Center for Mind and Brain, and the Center for Child and Family Studies.

    Entry Requirements

UC Davis offers admission to applicants who have the highest potential for graduate study and who, with the benefit of graduate education, are most likely to contribute substantially to their academic or professional fields through teaching, research or professional practice. UC Davis views as a high priority the enrollment of graduate students from different backgrounds and demographic groups.

    1. A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) from the institution where you have earned or will earn your bachelor's degree.
    2. By the time they enroll, successful applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent that is comparable to a degree from the University of California both in distribution of academic subject matter and in scholarship achievement. Regional accreditation for U.S. institutions and authorization by a national higher education authority for international institutions (at the time the degree was earned) are used as the eligibility standard.
    3. Application fee ($120 for domestic applicants, $140 for international applicants, or possible fee waiver for participants in approved Graduate Preparatory Programs)

    English Program Requirements

A strong understanding of the English language is important to your success at UC Davis. If you have been studying in the United States for fewer than three (3) years and your native language and school language of instruction prior to your study in the United States was not English, you must demonstrate English proficiency. Meeting this requirement through the AP exam, IB exams or transferable college courses also satisfy the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR).
