    About

Overview Humanities offered by San Diego State University does not seek to establish objective truths, but rather to think about the diversity of aesthetic trends, ideological systems, historical narratives, and lived experiences that comprise societies past and present, local and global. It does so through engagement not only with dominant cultural narratives, expressions, and institutions, but also with the perspectives of non-dominant individuals, communities, and cultures.Through humanistic inquiry, we not only gain insights into other cultural heritages but also develop skills that are vital in the global society we presently inhabit-- specifically, the abilities to engage critically and affectively with perspectives other than our own; communicate and collaborate across cultural boundaries; and address complex problems with attention to how they affect diverse populations.Humanities graduates are prepared to enter into a broad range of professions. They commonly pursue jobs in education, writing, publishing, translation and interpretation, museum curation, journalism, advertising, non-profit work, government work, and, increasingly, STEM. The business world is also desiring of liberal arts majors, whose language abilities and cultural knowledge make them ideally suited for management, administration, and public relations. Still other humanities majors go on to pursue an MA or PhD in a specific humanities discipline or a higher degree in business, law, or medicine.MajorThe major in Humanities, like the Classics major, combines language, literature, and culture. The major requires 30 upper division units and 12 lower division premajor units. There are two emphases: Global Humanities and European Humanities. The Global program provides a contrast between the European and non-European traditions. The European emphasis centers on a five-course survey of European civilization from the Ancient Mediterranean World to the 21st century. A foreign language requirement of four to seven semesters facilitates some expertise in a classical or national civilization. See MAPs (Major Academic Plans) to plan the eight semesters of your major.Premajor requirements consist of 12 lower division units that include the following: Humanities 101 or 102; History 105-106; and three units from Comparative Literature 270A, 270B, Humanities 140, Religious Studies 101, or Women’s Studies 102.All Humanities majors are required to take the Senior Seminar and to submit a senior portfolio. A minor is not required with this major. I want to find another Bachelor Course
