Master Architectural Lighting and Design Management (part-time programme for professionals)

    About

In September 2020, the Hochschule Wismar (University of Applied Sciences, Technology, Business and Design, Germany) has been offering the international part-time Master's programme in Architectural Lighting and Design Management for the eighth year in succession. This programme is held in the English language. The course of studies is based on the concept of "blended learning", and it has produced excellent results to date. Blended learning requires the students to be present at one of the designated (academic) locations for a week of seminars and tutorials once per semester. Locations include Wismar, Berlin, and Bangkok. Over the rest of the time, conferences and discussions are offered on the Internet every week as a means of supporting students' independent studies. The part-time distance learning programme is based on and around the blended learning concept, which has been developed from experience gained from over more than 19 years of teaching the on-campus Architectural Lighting Design Master's course of study in Wismar. As in the campus-based programme, the aim of the blended learning course of study is to comprehensively train lighting designers. The central capability of a lighting designer, regardless of whether he or she is dealing with daylight or artificial light, is to design the interrelation of architecture and light with their artistic, physical, and physiological aspects in a creative and autonomous way. This must be achieved while keeping both human well-being and the standards of sustainable architecture in mind. In the "Design Management" modules, students will learn how to set up architectural lighting design working groups or units and they will understand how to organise an office as well as improve the performance of a project. Students will understand market analysis tools and the strategic management approach. They will develop marketing and business plans. "Design Management" also includes the vision of design as part of the customers' value chain. Students will learn the investors', clients' and customers' language. The wide-ranging content of the programme is reflected both in the way the group of students is put together as well as in the background and expertise of the teaching staff. Students in the Master's course of study come from around the globe. The students in the programme work in groups of up to 30 people per study group. Like the students, the educators are also from all corners of the earth. The latter comprise renowned lighting designers and specialists from England, Sweden, France, Australia, China, Thailand, and Germany. Lecturers with a wide range of experience at local and international levels will lay the foundation to successfully manage nationally-focused architectural lighting projects as well as projects with an international perspective in the globalisation of design services. The course is targeted towards practising lighting designers and planners, architects, and electrical engineers who have already gained a first degree and who are seeking to continue their academic education and expand their knowledge and skills in the field of Lighting Design. In November 2018, all of our programmes were accredited by the ZEvA committee.
