    In this course you will

    • Further your career in the medical and health physics discipline with QUT’s Master of Applied Science (Medical Physics).
    • Gain an understanding of the clinical aspects of medical situations and enhance your communication skills with other clinical staff.
    • Prepare for a career in hospitals, health departments, tertiary institutions and medical instrumentation companies, either as a medical physicist, health physicist or bioengineer.
    • Have the option to exit early with a Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Physics).
    • Study a course that is accredited by the Australasian College of Physical Sciences and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM).

    Entry requirements

    You must have a recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in one of the following fields:

    • Biomedical, medical, medical electronics etc engineering
    • Biophysics
    • Electrical, avionics etc engineering
    • Geophysics
    • Mechanical engineering
    • Medical physics
    • Physics

    The following degrees (or higher qualification) are not acceptable:

    • Biomedical science
    • Laboratory science
    • Medical science

    Minimum English language requirements

    We accept English language proficiency scores from the following tests undertaken in a secure test centre. Tests must be taken no more than 2 years prior to the QUT course commencement.

    Careers and outcomes

    Graduates can seek employment in hospitals, health departments, tertiary institutions and medical instrumentation companies. Depending on the field of employment, graduates may be known as medical physicists, health physicists or bioengineers.

    As a professional medical or health physicist, your day-to-day tasks may include:

    • applying electronic tools and medical software, ultrasonics, radiation and computers to clinical and environmental problems.
    • monitoring the environment to maintain acceptable standards in the workplace and the community.
    • applying fundamental physical research in development programs.
    • being responsible for calibration, care and maintenance of instruments and apparatus.

    Professional recognition

    The Master of Applied Science (Medical Physics) has been accredited by the Australasian College of Physical Sciences and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM).  

    Graduates will receive exemptions from the academic requirements of the ACPSEM Training, Education, and Accreditation Program (TEAP) for Medical Physicists. Graduates of the Master of Applied Science will receive full exemption, while those completing the Graduate Diploma will receive exemption from the coursework component.  

    The TEAP is a five-year registrar training program that leads to accreditation as a Medical Physicist. For further details, please visit www.acpsem.org.au.
