Advance your career options as a digital media professional or learn how to implement digital transformations in your current industry.

VU’s Master of Digital Media is designed for a future-focused professional with an entrepreneurial spirit.

This course, informed by an advisory panel of prominent practitioners from industry and government, offers key insights into the very latest industry practices and processes.

Through our flexible and regularly updated curriculum, you’ll learn the skills to excel in:

    • user experience (UX) design
    • game production
    • search engine optimisation
    • content production and strategy
    • visualisations of data
    • social network and web analytics
    • design research.

You’ll also graduate with an impressive portfolio of UX and human-centred design research method examples.

On completion you’ll be ready to work as a digital media strategist, web designer or cross-media practitioner – making you indispensable in this global, progressive sector.

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    1. Plan and execute substantial digital media projects, including visual and audio design elements, motion graphics and animation, for a range of professional contexts
    2. Propose and critique processes for digital media transformation
    3. Analyse and interpret a range of data sources to assess and critically review projects and understand a context
    4. Apply digital media industry project management processes with a high level of personal autonomy and accountability
    5. Advocate and adjudicate solutions for working with others, as a leader or a team, to implement co-design and co-creation tools
    6. Communicate the potential and shortcomings of technology to justify and interpret practical and theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to a range of audiences

The course is informed by industry experts to help you understand and respond to the issues facing the industry.

In your second year of study, you’ll undertake a research project with both a practical and written component and have the option to link this to a known industry problem.

You can also gain sought-after business skills by embarking on a work placement or internship within our network of industry leaders.

VU also runs an annual event, to which all past graduates are invited, where we discuss and analyse that year’s industry developments, how we’ve incorporated them in our businesses and projects - and what’s in store for the future of digital media.

Industry practitioners take modules within the course. This year we have had the pleasure of working with the following people:

    • Andrea Andric (Content and Community Strategist at Arts Centre Melbourne)
    • Pete Chamberlain (Senior UX Designer at Seek Learning)
    • Dr Jenna Corcoran (Studio Manager, Studio Alec Finlay)
    • Amira Meyer (Digital Operations Manager at Melbourne Water)

Students can receive assignment credit for attending one of the many industry events in Melbourne.

This master degree is the final stage of a nested suite of three courses that make up the Master of Digital Media. The first stage is a Graduate Certificate in Digital Media and the second stage is a Graduate Diploma in Digital Media. Alternatively, you can enrol directly in this Master of Digital Media course.

Completion of one stage gives you credit towards the next. You can choose to exit the graduate certificate or graduate diploma level.
