    Overview

    Build on your experience as a education professional by studying the latest theory with a Master of Education (by coursework) from Victoria University.

    This flexible postgraduate education course is underpinned by a strong focus on social justice, sustainability and ethical action. You will gain the skills and confidence to address educational challenges and opportunities in the school system, universities, community, government and industry.

    Studying advanced theory under passionate and experienced educators, you'll further your expertise in learning and teaching practice.

    The Master of Education is designed for teachers, principals, community educators, youth workers, policy-makers and other professionals whose work has an educational component or responsibility.

    This course does not provide you with registration to teach in Australia.

    On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    1. Formulate a commitment to ethical action, social responsibility, and sustainability in an education context;

    2. Critically review perspectives on the contemporary context of education, vocational training and professional development locally, nationally and internationally;

    3. Apply knowledge about theories to frame and inform practice as a reflective educator;

    4. Interpret theoretical perspectives, analyse problems, and build an awareness of current educational research;

    5. Use technologies for communication, knowledge access, and collaboration in the construction of understanding;

    6. Explore the concept of educational change and professional learning in the workplace identifying a range of connections within professional and academic communities;

    7. Undertake educational inquiry and/or research.

    Students with an education background will have their prior skills and experience recognised. Applicants with a completed education qualification receive advanced standing for at least two, 24-credit-point units.

    During the application process, all applicants are able to apply for advanced standing for up to half of the total course.

    The Master of Education offers flexible learning options, with online, face-to-face and evening classes.

    You’ll undertake a variety of subjects across foundation, core and electives, as well as a research component.

    Completion of each stage of this course gives you credit towards the next. You can choose to exit at the graduate certificate or graduate diploma level.

    This course has in-built support for you, with small-group activities and assessment tasks.

    You can choose to complete a portion of your Master of Education degree with one of our 110 international partners.

    Entry Requirements

    When assessing your application, we consider your education, work experience, current skills and personal attributes (where relevant).

    Applicants for this course will need to meet the entry criteria outlined below. If you don’t meet the entry criteria, you may be able to gain entry by first completing a different course. We call this a ‘pathway’.

    For PhD applicants, we offer a related ‘Integrated PhD’ which allows you to establish relevant skills before beginning your research.

    You may also be eligible for course ‘credits’, where you are granted a unit or units towards your qualification for equivalent previous study or work experience, so you can graduate sooner.

    Entry criteria

    To be considered for postgraduate study, you will need to have specific academic qualifications, as outlined below. We also consider non-academic research and work experience for our research candidates.

    Admission criteria

    Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a similar discipline OR Completion of an Australian Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) in a similar discipline PLUS IELTS (or equivalent): Overall score of 7 (Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 7.0)
