    Master of Forensic Mental Health

    About

    This degree is delivered in collaboration with Queensland Health's Forensic Mental Health Service to provide postgraduate professional training for current or future forensic mental health practitioners, including nurses, psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists. It also provides an extension to undergraduate degrees in nursing, applied science, criminology and criminal justice, and applied psychology. The degree provides advanced training to enhance and develop specialist skills and knowledge to work more effectively with the forensic mental health population. You will gain a thorough understanding of research-based knowledge in forensic mental health and how it is applied in practice.

    Duration

    The Master of Forensic Mental Health offers a range of different durations depending on your prior studies and work experience.

    You may be eligible to complete this program in 1.5 years full time, or part-time equivalent, if you have:

    • Bachelor, related discipline

    You may be eligible to complete this program in 1 year full-time, or part-time equivalent, (with 40 credit points of advanced standing) if you have:

    • Bachelor Honours, related discipline OR
    • Graduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the Master of Forensic Mental Health, a student must hold:

    • a three-year Bachelor degree in a related field (Psychology, Nursing, Criminology, Social Work or other mental health-related discipline) from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 (on a 7-point scale)
    • OR a Graduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 (on a 7-point scale) - these students will receive 40 credit points of advanced standing.
    • OR a Bachelor Honours degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a related discipline with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 (on a 7-point scale) - these students may apply for up to 40 credit points.

    English Program Requirements

    English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows:

    English test results must be no more than two years old.

    International students who successfully complete the Direct Entry Program (DEP) will satisfy the English Language requirements for this Griffith degree.

    The Direct Entry Program (DEP) is not available for Domestic students.

    The above requirements are HIGHER than those stipulated in University policy. Applicants should refer to the English language requirements section of the following procedure for further information:

    If you do not meet the University's specified English language requirements, you may wish to contact the Griffith English Language Institute to increase your eligibility for entering a Griffith University program. This Institute offers a number of English language and other courses at both its Brisbane and Gold Coast branches.

    Career

    The program is intended for mental health professionals working in (or intending to work in) the forensic mental health field. In addition to health departments specifically catering to forensic patients, the program may be relevant to professionals in related areas such as corrections, families departments and disability services.

    To apply, provide details of your previous qualification or work experience in the ‘credit for previous study’ section when you submit your application. You may be required to supply detailed course outlines of your previous qualification(s) in English.

    • if you are applying for a music or visual arts degree you may need to submit a portfolio of work, or audition (see individual program for details)

    *To certify your documents, a Justice of the Peace or other public notary—lawyer, policeman, solicitor, embassy official—must see your original documents, and sign and stamp the copies for you.
