In a world of rapid change, there has never been a greater demand for the mastery of the written word. The digitisation of the modern economy has created a raft of new job titles, all of which require expertise in writing and editing – in addition to the jobs that already drive Australia's dynamic creative industries.

The Master of Writing, Editing and Publishing covers all stages of the writing and publishing process, and the skills needed to meet growing demands. During this program, you'll develop practical knowledge and experience in writing and editing across genres including creative writing, corporate and technical documents, academic research in the creative arts, advertising, marketing and more.

Your lecturers will include award-winning authors and arts industry professionals, as well as an array of guest lecturers with expertise in all aspects of professional writing and publishing. Together, they'll provide you with up-to-date insights and industry knowledge across traditional and new media.

You'll learn about the continually evolving landscapes of the Australian and international publishing industries, and have the opportunity to intern at arts organisations, such as the highly respected University of Queensland Press, literary journals, educational publishers and trade publishers, including UQ's own Corella Press, which specialises in rediscovering nineteenth century crime and mystery writers.

Entry Requirements

Previous degree or professional experience

The previous study you need to have completed will depend on the program you want to study.

For most programs, you'll need to have completed an approved degree equivalent to an Australian bachelor's degree. However, for some programs we'll consider other relevant experience, such as work experience.

For some programs, we'll only accept previous study in specific disciplines. This ensures you have the required level of subject area knowledge to succeed in your program.

Minimum grade point average

For most programs, you need to have achieved a minimum grade point average (GPA) in your previous studies. Your GPA is a measure of academic performance based on the:

grades you received, and
number of units you completed in a degree.

We use a 7-point grading scale, where a 4 is a pass and 7 is the highest grade. Different institutions use many different grading scales and methods for calculating GPAs.

When you apply, we'll convert the grades you received in your previous studies to the UQ grading scale. We may exclude certain non-academic subjects and include all failing grades.

How to Apply

Step 1: Create an account

Create an account in UQ Online Applications.

If you can't access UQ Online Applications, email [email protected] to request a hard-copy form. We charge a non-refundable fee of A$150 if you use a hard-copy form.

Step 2: Complete your application

Complete all details on the application form and include all required documents. You can save an incomplete form and return later.

On your application, let us know if:

you would like to apply for an English language pathway package
you want to arrange your Overseas Student Health Cover through UQ.

You'll need to provide:

a complete academic transcript and/or testamurs for any non-UQ studies
a copy of your passport or national ID card
documentation demonstrating your English language proficiency.

Upload documents as PDFs to reduce their file size.

Your academic transcript should detail:

all of the courses you studied
any degrees or diplomas you were awarded.

You only need to submit an academic transcript for non-UQ programs.

Provide a certified copy of your transcript as soon as it is available. Transcripts can be certified at a Student Centre, by an approved UQ agent, or by other appropriate parties.

Don't send original documents. We're not able to return them.

If you're waiting to complete your studies

If you're waiting for a transcript or your current results, you can submit your application with a note stating when your transcript is likely to be available. Forward a certified copy of your transcript as soon as you receive it.

When you forward your transcript, you need to clearly:

mark it with your UQ student number (if you know it), family name, first name, date of birth, and the UQ program you have applied for
state that you have already submitted an application.

Step 3: Submit your application

When you're satisfied your application is complete, submit it.

You'll need to pay a A$100 fee for each application you submit. This fee can't be refunded.

Closing dates

Make sure you submit your application by the closing date:

Semester 1: 30 November of the previous year
Semester 2: 31 May of the same year.

Some programs have different closing dates – these will be listed on the program page.

We may consider late applications, but this can't be guaranteed.

UQ College courses

For all UQ College English courses, including the Bridging English (BE) program, the deadline to apply, accept your offer and pay tuition fees, is 4 weeks before the course start date. UQ College cannot guarantee that places will be available after the deadline. Late applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Step 4: Manage your application

UQ International Admissions will assess your application. They will contact you through UQ Online Applications with any updates or requests for additional information.

If you didn't apply through UQ Online Applications, UQ International Admissions will contact you by email.
