    Overview The Master in Mathematics degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago with concentration in Pure Mathematics is designed for students with a strong mathematical background who intend to continue for a PhD degree. While earning the MS degree, students are encouraged to complete one or more of the basic 500-level course sequences which lead to a written preliminary examination.Study and research is available in the general areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, probability and statistics, mathematical computer science, and the teaching of mathematics. Additional information, guidelines, and requirements are published annually in the department’s Graduate Handbook.
