    Overview

    This course will help you enter, and develop a detailed knowledge of the mining industry.

    It will enable you to become knowledgeable in specialist skills, particularly mining engineering methods. It prepares you for operational and management positions, in both open-pit and underground work.

    Graduates may be employed as underground and/or open pit mining engineers or quarry managers, or hold other senior management positions once the necessary experience is gained.

    What you need in order to get into this course. There are different pathway options depending on your level of work and education experience.

    Applicants for a Graduate Diploma are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/. Applicants generally require a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met. All Curtin courses have compulsory and other core capabilities that are essential for demonstrating the achievement of course learning outcomes and graduation. Students who are unable to meet or demonstrate those requirements, now or in later stages during their studies, may seek reasonable adjustments by the University wherever possible to facilitate alternative ways of achieving those requirements. If reasonable adjustments cannot be accommodated, Curtin will discuss study options to find an alternative course of study or an exit degree.     Graduate Diplomas contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study.

    Students will study 200 credits of core units encompassing the key aspects of mining engineering skills and knowledge, across the breadth of the industry, including mineral exploration, mine planning, design, engineering, optimisation and management of mining operations.

    Have your supporting documents to hand, and ensure they meet our guidelines. The documents may include certified copies of your qualifications, English language proficiency documents and supplementary forms for certain courses.

    If you have undertaken previous study or work that matches the content of some of your Curtin course units, you may be able to obtain credit for recognised learning, which exempts you from studying those units.

    2. Submit your application

    You can apply direct online through our Applicant Portal. You can access the Applicant Portal by:

    1. Navigating to the relevant course page
    2. Click ‘Apply now’
    3. When the pop-up window appears, select “Apply directly to Curtin University”.

    If you want to package your course with a Curtin English course, you can submit your application with your course application documents to streamline the process.

    3. Accept your Curtin offer

    If your application is successful, you will receive an offer that you will need to accept or reject.

    If you accept your offer, you will receive a Confirmation of Enrolment ­– a document from Curtin that details your course, how long you will be studying the course, and the tuition fees. This document can be used for acquiring a student visa.

    4. Apply for your visa

    Apply to the Australian government for your student visa. Gaining a student visa will allow you to participate in full-time study in Australia and work up to 40 hours in a fortnight. If you’re under 18 years of age, you must have approved accommodation and welfare arrangements in place before a visa can be issued.
