The Department of Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology offers a nationally visible doctoral program for students interested in laboratory research and advanced training at a top competitive level. The program provides multiple laboratory opportunities in the molecular aspects of modern biomedical research, and is complemented by an extensive choice of courses across the disciplines of molecular genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, and bioinformatics. We have developed our research programs in several "focus areas" namely: cancer biology and regenerative medicine, cardiovascular biology and biochemistry, microbiology and immunology, and structural biology. Each represents a dynamic research area within the flourishing field of molecular medicine. Many individual research programs directly impact questions of human biology and disease. Thus, the doctoral program offers diverse opportunities in research while integrating the fundamental knowledge base required for tomorrow's biomedical scientist, providing training and experience that is second-to-none.
In biology and medicine, the coming decades will be dominated by application of information derived from knowledge of the human genome. Our ongoing commitment is to ensure that students graduating from this program are equipped with the highest technical, intellectual and communication skills required for successful participation in this exciting future.
