MSc Psychology Conversion

About

With MSc Psychology Conversion you will develop a broad knowledge of psychology on a course that can be tailored to broaden your mind and develop your career.

This master’s programme has been designed for those who have an interest in psychology and want to follow a course that is fully accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

The course’s compulsory modules are taught over two days per week between 9:00 and 17:00, allowing you to balance your studies with other responsibilities, with classes delivered exclusively at postgraduate level, rather than shared with undergraduate courses. Timetabled days for 2024/25 are Thursday and Friday.

As a master’s student you can take advantage of our cutting-edge research laboratories, neuroimaging facilities, and resources for observation. Teaching is also informed by our three in-house NHS clinics (Anxiety & Depression, Speech & Language Therapy, Autism and Berkshire Memory & Cognition Clinic), and the world-renowned Charlie Waller Institute for evidence-based psychological treatments.

You will be taught by leading academics who combine research and theory to provide you with the skills to go on to your future career. We will provide you with a modern, wide, evidence-based introduction to psychology as a science, in excellent facilities all set in our lovely Whiteknights campus.

The programme is taught separately from undergraduates but follows the same rigorous structure as our successful BSc in Psychology, and includes optional specialist modules such as An Introduction to CBT, for those interested in Clinical Psychology.

We cover all the important sub-disciplines of psychology, including:

Development in typical and atypical populations
Neuroscience
Perception
Cognition
Social psychology
Differential psychology

A number of features make our programme unique in the UK. Our special seminars and enhanced teaching and assessment approaches are aimed specifically at graduates from other disciples, and we offer sessions designed specifically for conversion students that cover skills and information to enhance employability.

As part of the programme, you are required to have an understanding of statistics, but we understand that many students will have minimal knowledge when they start on the degree, so we provide support seminars in parallel with the main teaching sessions.

We offer an optional component so that you can tailor your degree according to whether you are interested in the fundamental science of the mind and brain or would prefer to pursue a career in a clinical psychology-related field. An optional Research Placement module is also available, giving you the opportunity to work in one of our world-class research laboratories.

Throughout the course you will gain practical experience, and learn how to devise your own experiments, culminating in designing and conducting your own MSc research project. This project will be supervised by one of our academic staff — there is a huge range of possible disciplines and topics to choose from.

Overall, 100% of graduates from Psychology are in work or further study within 15 months of the end of their course. Entry Requirements

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 5.5.

Entry requirements: Typically a good undergraduate honours degree (2:1 or above). You will need to demonstrate your interest in studying psychology.

Career

As a graduate of this course you will be qualified for further training to become a professional psychologist. Our MSc Psychology Conversion degree is accredited by the British Psychology Society and provides you with the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership.

This course is particularly applicable to many careers involving research, data management and analytical thinking. You could go onto a career in a psychology related field such as clinical, forensic, counselling and educational psychology, as well as broader fields such as education, health, human resources, marketing and commerce. Previous organisations that students have gone onto work for include the NHS, civil services, schools and charities. Alternatively, you can choose to further develop your skills by moving into research, teacher training or further postgraduate studies.

How to Apply

1. Check our entry requirements

If English is not your first language, you will also need to meet our English language requirements. You can find the IELTS requirements on each course page. We also accept a range of alternative English language qualifications.

If your English ability is not at the required standard, you can choose to apply for one of our Pre-sessional English programmes. The programmes will equip you with the study skills and preparation needed for academic study in English. The length of your Pre-sessional English programme is determined by your current level of English against the English language requirements of your chosen master’s programme.

2. Application and funding deadlines

Although most master’s programmes do not formally close for applications, some programmes do have application deadlines; if your programme has a deadline it will be specified on the course page under the ‘Entry requirements’ section. For programmes that do not have a specific application deadline, places may be limited and programmes may become full. We recommend that you apply as early as possible (particularly if you are an international student) to allow time not only for us to process your application, but for you to ensure that you can meet any offer conditions, arrange your accommodation and, importantly, funding for your studies. For admission in September, we do recommend that you apply by 1 August (if you are a UK applicant) and 1 July (if you are an international applicant requiring a visa to come to the UK) however, we are happy to still consider applications after these dates.

Funding deadlines

We require an offer of study for many of our master’s scholarships and bursaries. You should check deadlines for applications carefully, and each scholarship or bursary will have specific application instructions. We may add scholarships throughout the year, so it is a good idea to re-visit our scholarships and bursaries page.

3. Submit your application

You can apply for master’s programmes directly through our online application system, RISIS. For our PGCE/Teacher Training programmes, applications must be made via the Department of Education's Find Postgraduate Teacher Training portal. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an automatic confirmation.

Various documents are needed to make your application. You should electronically upload:

full transcripts of all degree programmes taken. If these are not in English, a certified translation into English is required. Please do not mail original copies; we only require PDF copies via electronic upload,
an English language certificate (for example IELTS or TOEFL), if English is not your first language (this can also be provided after you submit your application),
contact details for two academic/professional references. Your references will automatically be invited via email to upload their reference directly once you have submitted your application. Please remind your references to check their junk/spam filters for the email and let them know that the link to the form is only valid for 20 days,
statement of purpose. Your personal statement should outline your academic performance, interest in applying to master’s study, any relevant work experience and skills gained,
a copy of your passport (for international students).
