Overview A thorough understanding of music theory, history and literature is required of the student majoring in music, and a high priority is given to general musicianship and the development of the highest level of artistic achievement within the student's chosen area of applied music. All courses and degree plans are designed to satisfy the requirements for music accrediting agencies.The Department of Music at Dallas Baptist University is accredited with the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). In 1998, the Department of Music was given a commendation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Degree programs leading to state certification in music education (choral) conform to the requirements of the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).Educational GoalsTo enable students to:Gain an overall knowledge of music theory, forms, and structure.Develop a workable knowledge of the history of Western music and cultivate an awareness of the influence of music upon culture.Cultivate an awareness of non-Western indigenous music and its influence upon culture.Present public performances at the highest artistic level possible.
