Musical Instrument Craft (Piano Making and Repair)

    About

The BA (Hons) Musical Instrument Craft course aims to develop traditional skills, knowledge and craftsmanship in the very specialist field of Musical Instrument Crafts. While musical instruments can be mass produced and are widely available, there is a continued demand for high end instruments by professional performers and musicians who require bespoke instruments or highly specialised and intricate restoration and tuning work on valuable performance instruments. Globally there are few craftspeople equipped with the skills to provide this service. Many existing renowned specialists originate from Newark College and so Newark is responsible for setting the trend for the standards and expectations of the trade. It prepares successful learners with the skills needed to join the piano trade for sustainable employment. Learners also benefit from the school’s strong links with the industry: a regular feature of which is visiting speakers from trade organisations and suppliers. Graduating students enjoy a range of job opportunities either in employment by piano firms and shops or on a self-employed basis. The Steinway Company, amongst others, have recruited directly from the Piano School.
