    NC Horse Care (Racehorse Care)

    About

    In the Racehorse Care course you will study a range of topics to develop the knowledge and skills required to work in the thoroughbred horse racing industry.

    This course helps develop the skills you need to work in the thoroughbred racing horse industry, either stud or racing. At the same time, it helps you gain the personal, interpersonal and workplace skills that will help you succeed in any job.

    Offered in conjunction with the Scottish Racing Academy, this course is recognised by the British Horseracing Authority.

    This course is the first step on the ladder of equine qualifications offered at SRUC and runs in parallel with the NC in Horse Care.

    It is designed to give a practical foundation in the care of racehorses. The course provides students with the qualification required to be eligible for employment in racing yards.

    Students will gain skills relevant for a range of career opportunities within the racing industry. Students will undertake early morning and weekend yard duties as part of the course. An acceptable level of fitness is required to enable students to ride effectively and carry out yard duties.

    You'll study a range of topics that help give you the skills you need to work in the thoroughbred racing horse industry.

    The course provides you with the qualifications racing yards look for in potential employees. It teaches skills that open a range of career opportunities in the racing industry.

    Horse Care Units include:

    • Horse Care: Horse Health: An Introduction
    • Horse Care: Watering and Feeding: An Introduction
    • Horse Care: Stable Routine
    • Horse Care: Grooming and Clothing
    • Horse Care: Safe Working Practices

    Racing Specific Units include:

    • Assisting with the Care of a Racehorse
    • Safe Handling of Thoroughbred Horses
    • Racehorse Care: Preparation for Ridden Work
    • Escorting Racehorses to Race Meetings
    • Horse Rehabilitation and Therapy

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Three National 4s (preferably including English and Maths) plus two weeks of practical work experience.

    Evidence of riding ability, to include a minimum of walk, trot, canter and jumping.
