    PDA Ecological Surveying

    About

The PDA in Ecological Surveying is designed to provide you with the competencies required in order to enter the field of ecological surveying.

This unique SQA award will teach you ecological theory, identification skills and field surveying methodologies. You'll also become familiar with the latest GIS technology and work on your business skills. By the end of the course you'll be ready to apply for jobs as an ecological surveyor.

You'll learn the key aspects of ecology and ecosystems, encompassing the abiotic and biotic factors affecting ecosystems and the structure and conservation of biological communities.

You will develop understanding and knowledge of techniques available for surveying and monitoring plant and animal populations and habitats. You'll learn how ecological principles are applied to practical procedures and develop practical skills by carrying out and reporting on an ecological survey.

The course also provides candidates with an introduction into how environmental and countryside regulation is formulated and implemented in the EU and UK.

Download our course guide for more information.

Please note: This course may require you to attend three study weekends at our Edinburgh campus (depending on current Covid-19 guidelines).

The PDA in Ecological Surveying is designed to provide you with the competencies required in order to enter the field of ecological surveying.

There are seven taught modules, ranging from the basics of ecological theory, through to using technology, eventually ending up in the skills required to set the trainee up in business. Campus study days where students are guided through some of the more challenging aspects are provided. These are highly recommended for some units on the course, although not compulsory.
