PGCE Secondary Economics and Business Education
About
PGCE Secondary (Economics and Business Education) will train you to become a teacher of economics and business education across the 14 to 19 age range.
It will prepare you to teach the National Curriculum and related national strategies, GCSE and A-level.
Completion leads to both a postgraduate qualification and recommendation for qualified teacher status (QTS).
University-based sessions will enable you to reflect on teaching methods. You will be given the opportunity to develop your own teaching style, to set personal targets, to demonstrate initiative and to evaluate your work in planning, teaching and assessing.
We will help you to transform your subject knowledge into teaching skills and educational theory into practice.
University tutors have subject expertise as successful teachers and examiners for major boards at GCSE and A-level. You will be taught by a teaching team with a nationally-recognised reputation for research, teaching and publications in business education.
We also use the expertise of experienced teachers from our partnership schools to complement the teaching of University-based sessions. This includes sessions led by subject mentors, who will help you develop your subject knowledge and provide advice about teaching methods.
The University-based sessions will give you creative and innovative ideas to take into the classroom.

Career
Career opportunities
This PGCE gives you a large amount of first-hand classroom experience which is probably the best way to set you up for your full-time role once qualified.
The course has allowed me to make a smooth transition from trainee to qualified. As a cohort, we developed a strong bond with one another that has continued beyond the course. We have been able to support and learn from one another over the year.
Harvey Williams / PGCE Graduate and teacher of Economics and Business Studies
Completing a PGCE is one route to becoming a fully qualified teacher. This form of teacher training is recommended for anyone with an undergraduate degree who is looking to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
You need QTS to teach in a state-maintained or special school in England and Wales. While other routes to gain QTS exist, they do not all come with the postgraduate qualification of a PGCE. A PGCE from The University of Manchester is a valued qualification regionally, nationally and internationally.
When you study a PGCE with us, we help you prepare for a successful career in education. You will be given clear direction, advice and support when making applications for teaching posts and our employment rates are consistently high.
In addition to this, a PGCE qualification can count as 60 of the 180 credits required for a master's degree, and The University of Manchester offers a range of postgraduate Education courses should you wish to continue your professional development by completing a master's as you progress further in your career.
