    About

    The PhD in Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Studies offers research opportunities for students with specific interest in the field of Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Studies. The research profiles of staff members are very varied, covering applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, corpus linguistics, bi- and multilingualism, second language pedagogy, intercultural studies, intercultural competence and the role of English in a globalised world. Research in related areas is also welcome, including language-specific research in applied linguistics and intercultural studies in (or through) German, Spanish or French.

    Entry Requirements

    MA in Chinese Studies, MA in French, MA in German, MA in Spanish, MA in Applied Linguistics (with at least a II.2 degree respectively), or equivalent.
    Students who do not hold an MA or equivalent qualification (only admitted in exceptional cases) may be required to take modules from the SMLLC MA programme. Students may, in consultation with their supervisor and the Head of School, take additional MA modules.

    Minimum English language requirements: please visit Maynooth University International Office website for information about English language tests accepted and required scores. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and non-EU applicants.

      Students interested in coming to Maynooth University as a Non-EU Study Abroad or Exchange student can apply to Maynooth University for one semester or one academic year. 

      If you wish to be a study abroad or exchange student, you must first be nominated to Maynooth University by your home school Coordinator/Advisor. 

      If your home school does not have a partnership with Maynooth University, you can apply to us directly or through one of the Study Abroad Providers we work with.

      The above fees are confirmed for the 2022/23 academic year only and may be subject to change after that.

      If you are coming to Maynooth University as a non-EU international student for a semester or a full-year you will be eligible for the above fees.
      Please note that these fees are for tuition only and additional fees for accommodation, immigration etc. may be incurred. Exchange students from partner universities are exempt from the above tuition fees.

      APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

      In Order To Complete Your Maynooth University Study Abroad Application You Need:

      Required documents:

      • Transcript 
      • Passport photo page scan (please ensure you include your name when saving the scanned document)
      • Two academic references (if GPA is below 3.0)
      • English language test score (if English is not your first language)

      The English Language Requirements Are:

      • IELTS 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in each band)
      • TOEFL paper-based (560) or TOEFL IBT (92) (we do not accept TOEFL ITP) 

      APPLICATION PROCESS

      You Have Submitted Your Application, What Happens Next?

      Once you submit your application the international office team will process your details and will assess if your application is suitable to be accepted. This process can be time consuming but we endeavour to respond to you with an update within 2-4 weeks of submitting your application.

      ACCEPTANCE EMAILS will be sent to the email address entered on the application form on a rolling basis.     

      Once you have submitted your application we highly advise you to start looking at the type of classes you can study here at Maynooth University. 
      At Maynooth University, we have an International Coodinator in each Department who is a point of contact for any academic queries, e.g. course content, etc. You can contact the International Coodinators if you require further academic detail than what is included on our course finder database.

       

      DISABILITY & ACCESS OPTIONS

      MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY ACESS & DISABILITY OFFICE

      If you have a disability or medical condition and think you may need additional supports while studying at Maynooth University, you can apply for accommodations with the Disability Office. Please note to avail of Disability Supports, you must provide verification of disability from an appropriate professional. In order to be allocated to an advisor and avail of these supports, you must register with the Disability Office, which should be done after you receive your acceptance and before arrival in Maynooth.

      Please note, if you wish to avail of Exam Accommodations, the deadline for Exam Accommodations is the first Friday in November for the January exams and the first Friday in March for both the May and August exams.
