Our four-year integrated PhD Applied Linguistics follows the MA Applied Linguistics programme for year 1. By opting for our four-year Integrated course, you will benefit from guidance and training to develop the research mind set needed for your PhD studies.
We offer a three-year supervised research route for students with a solid knowledge of existing research in the field and a good understanding of research methods.

An undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK 2:2 (see the information above), and a master’s degree with a good grade is required for most PhD programmes, in addition to a well-developed research proposal in a field in which we can offer supervision. If English is not your first language, we require IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum component score of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other components. If you do not meet our IELTS requirements then you may be able to complete a pre-sessional English pathway that enables you to start your course without retaking IELTS. Additional Notes The University uses academic selection criteria to determine an applicant’s ability to successfully complete a course at the University of Essex. Where appropriate, we may ask for specific information relating to previous modules studied or work experience.
