    We welcome applications for postgraduate research degrees all year round, and will consider alternative starting dates when the timing doesn't fit with our enrolment intake dates: October, February and June.

    Entry requirements

    The minimum requirements to apply for a PhD are:

    • First or upper-second class Bachelor’s degree at an approved university or institution
    • Exceptionally, candidates with lower than above but with experience and training as suitable preparation

    The minimum requirements to apply for an MPhil are:

    • Bachelor’s degree at an approved university or institution
    • Professional qualification approved by Research Degrees Committee and suitable general education and training
    • Exceptionally, candidates with less than above but able to give satisfactory evidence of having obtained adequate standard of knowledge may be accepted by the Research Degrees Committee

    Places are subject to a robust research proposal followed by a successful interview process.

    English language requirements

    If English is not your first language, we ask for a minimum standard entry requirement of 6.5 IELTS (with sub tests not lower than 5.5).

    The certificate must have been gained within two years of the proposed start date.

    English Program Requirements

    English language

    If your first language is not English, you will need to provide proof of your English proficiency before you can be admitted onto any of our undergraduate or postgraduate courses.

    Alternatively, you can study a pre-sessional English language course with us here in Bradford.

    The standard University requirement is 6.0* with no sub-test less than 5.0 (or equivalent) on the IELTS or on the university's own entry test the BASALT.

    However, if you require a Student Visa to study you will need to meet the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department's requirement which is currently IELTS 6.0 with no sub-test less than 5.5. Conditional offers to international students will be made on this basis.

    Please note that some courses may require a higher level of English language proficiency than the University standard requirements. For details of each programme's English language requirement please see the individual course pages.
