    Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

    About

    Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

Choose a Minor in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies!  This interdisciplinary minor combines courses in advanced Portuguese language and culture, Portuguese literature in translation, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, History and Political Science. For more information on course requirements, visit the Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Minor catalog.

    • Portuguese fulfills the language requirement at the College.  The Basic Track 101-102-201-202 (12 credits in 2 years) or the Fast Track 150-250 (12 credits in 1 year) counts toward the Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Minor.  So when you complete your language requirement with Portuguese, you will already have 6 credits toward a minor!  Classes for the minor can be all in Portuguese, or combined with classes taught in English in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Political Science, or History.
    • You can spend a summer study abroad semester in Brazil led by our faculty, with no Portuguese language requirement!
      Study Abroad in Brazil

In our Maymester study abroad we learn how Brazil's history contributes to its rich diversity of culture, and how literature provides a point of entry for tropical places like the Amazon.  You will visit Recife, Fernando de Noronha, Salvador, Iguassu Falls, Manaus, Belem, or Marajo Island. Boat trips on the Amazon River are a highlight. You will also experience the big-city life of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
