    What you'll learn

    • Critically analyse and evaluate contemporary understanding of the concepts and principles of positive behaviour support utilising a biopsychosocial model, with a focus on enhanced quality of life, wellbeing, co-regulation and proactive supports that meet underlying needs.
    • Demonstrate expert judgement via reflective practice and analytical reasoning when embedding contemporary behaviour support principles within documentation, planning and system-wide processes.
    • Identify, analyse and discriminate the range of individual, social and environmental factors that contribute to the experiences and underlying needs of people with complex needs or behaviour that can be seen to be of concern.
    • Assess and facilitate implementation of evidenced based and data driven supports across observed changes in people’s stress and capacity that are person centred and build the capability of support networks and environments.
    • Apply skills in building the capability of support networks to embed everyday practices, including communication support, that meet underlying human rights and universal needs, and reduce the likelihood of stress and distress.
    • Recognise potential or current aversive, abusive or restrictive practices.
    • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and critical appreciation of the impact of values, system culture, beliefs, attitudes and ethical principles on the understanding of people’s needs, neurodiversity, human rights, behaviour support principles and practice.
    • Appraise and apply skills in partnering with people with support needs, their support networks and stakeholders to develop and implement support plans that are co-designed, person-centred, meaningful and accessible.
    • Analyse the context of safeguards and apply skills to guide and partner with support networks to plan for an improvement in wellbeing and quality of life and reduction in restrictive practices.

    What you need in order to get into this course. There are different pathway options depending on your level of work and education experience.

    Application Requirements

    This course is only available part-time. You may study either 1 or 2 units per semester. Example study plans, with recommended sequences of units are available in this document.

    The course is only available online. Some content will be online/self-guided, with embedded recorded lectures. There will also be online ‘live’ teaching sessions, delivered via our learning system, Blackboard. Each unit will have a slightly different balance of online and live content.

    To meet the needs of students on both sides of Australia, ‘live’ online sessions will typically be offered late afternoon in Perth, which will be evenings on the East Coast of Australia.

    Applications for intakes in the next year of study will be assessed (on a merit basis) in December of each year. You will be notified whether your application has been successful late in the calendar year, if your application was received prior to December. Applications submitted early in the same calendar year as the study period will typically be processed within 2 – 3 weeks.

    Have your supporting documents to hand, and ensure they meet our guidelines. The documents may include certified copies of your qualifications, English language proficiency documents and supplementary forms for certain courses.

    If your documents are not issued in English, an official translation from a recognised translation service must be provided.

    If you have undertaken previous study or work that matches the content of some of your Curtin course units, you may be able to obtain credit for recognised learning, which exempts you from studying those units.

    2. Submit your application

    You can apply direct online through our Applicant Portal. You can access the Applicant Portal by:

    1. Navigating to the relevant course page
    2. Click ‘Apply now’
    3. When the pop-up window appears, select “Apply directly to Curtin University”.

    If you want to package your course with a Curtin English course, you can submit your application with your course application documents to streamline the process.

    3. Accept your Curtin offer

    If your application is successful, you will receive an offer that you will need to accept or reject.

    If you accept your offer, you will receive a Confirmation of Enrolment ­– a document from Curtin that details your course, how long you will be studying the course, and the tuition fees. This document can be used for acquiring a student visa.

    4. Apply for your visa

    Apply to the Australian government for your student visa. Gaining a student visa will allow you to participate in full-time study in Australia and work up to 40 hours in a fortnight. If you’re under 18 years of age, you must have approved accommodation and welfare arrangements in place before a visa can be issued.
