    About

As you pursue a graduate degree in Literacy Education, youâll develop advanced skills to help you meet the complex demands of fostering literacy learning in schools, in community sites, and in a variety of workplaces from corporate offices to arts and not-for-profit organizations.

Our Masterâs programs will help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to become an educator in literacy education. Whether you want to pursue a career as a classroom teacher or an educator outside the traditional classroom, we can help you develop the background and professional skills you need.

We welcome both teachers and non-traditional educators in our programs. Whether you have a Bachelor of Education, a Bachelorâs degree in another field, or an equivalent education and teaching experience, a Masterâs degree in Literacy Education may be right for you!

At the Mount, we are committed to providing our students with flexible and accessible learning options. We understand that you may be working, studying full-time, or balancing the demands of your family, your career, and your education, and weâre ready to help you succeed. We welcome both full-time and part-time students.

As a full-time student, you can complete the graduate program requirements in as little as one year. Part-time students generally finish their studies in two years, but if you need a little more time, you can take up to five years to earn your Masterâs degree in our on-campus programs. If you enroll in one of our off-campus cohorts, your program will take two years to complete.

    Your Career

Our graduate programs will help you to become an educator, or prepare you to focus your existing teaching career on literary education. Graduates of our programs are working as classroom and community teachers, literacy tutors, program developers and supervisors, resource specialists, consultants, administrators, scholars, and university and college instructors.

    Entry Requirements

    Admission Requirements

To be admitted to a Master of Education degree program, the student must ordinarily have:

    1.   a bachelor’s degree and a Bachelor of Education or equivalent, and

    2.   at least one year of successful teaching experience, normally at the elementary or middle school level.

Only students who have shown the potential to perform well in graduate studies, normally a minimum average of B (GPA 3.0) and positive letters of recommendation) will be considered for admission.

Admission is on a competitive basis. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. At present, a limited number of students on a part-time basis are admitted every year. Students who wish to study full-time should contact the program head.

    English Program Requirements

If an applicant’s first language is not English, official reports with acceptable scores from one of the following tests must be submitted:

    • the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    • the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test
    • the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • the CanTEST
    • the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)

The following test scores indicate the English language requirements for international student admission to full-time studies and the language bridging programs at MSVU:
