    Sports Therapy BSc (Hons)

    About

    Learn how to help athletes recover from injury and design injury prevention programmes for sports teams with our sports therapy degree.

    Whether you have ambitions of working within the professional sports environment or running your own clinic, our accredited Sports Therapy degree gives you the skills, knowledge, and experience to treat and rehabilitate individuals with neurological, muscular, or skeletal complaints.

    The course utilises a range of industry-leading technologies and facilities to provide outstanding educational experiences.

    Work placements

    Throughout all levels of the degree, you are able to participate in placement type activities. Some of these activities are ‘internalâ which are supervised and potentially hosted by Staffordshire University.

    You will gain valuable applied hands on experience within our dedicated patient facing clinic (SUST Clinic), these hours contribute towards your total placement hours and are necessary to gain membership with the Society of Sports Therapy. The clinic treats all aspects of neuromusculoskeletal disorders and can see up to four clients at any time. Clients range from elite athletes to sedentary individuals. The Sports Therapy degree allows you to gain valuable practical experience working under the guidance of qualified health professionals.

    You will work with our external partners in a range of different settings such as professional sport, sports therapy, physiotherapy clinics and in an NHS setting. You will have the chance to represent the Sports Therapy degree and Staffordshire University at many national sporting events throughout the year.

    As an undergraduate in our sport and exercise department, you can also join our Sports Academy as a volunteer, helping to deliver physical activity and classroom-based workshops to young people in schools and communities.

    Our lecturing staff are all passionate professionals who are dedicated to ensuring the teaching and learning on the degree is inspiring, challenging, and accessible to all students. Our staff have all worked in industry; field, clinical and research based which allows them to bring their first-hand experiences to teaching. Whether that be emergency trauma on a football pitch, a particularly complex injury case or the chance to be involved with your lecturers latest data collection for research.

    You will build knowledge surrounding soft tissue techniques, clinical anatomy, exercise prescription and rehabilitation and physiological response to exercise, biomechanics, and nutrition for injury. You will also complete a first aid and emergency trauma management course and gain work placement experience. In your final year you will design,

    Our sessions are a mixture of theoretical learning and practical case scenarios in modest groups of up to 16 which means you are more readily supported with your studies and allows you to engage easily within the sessions.

    Upon graduating, you will be a professional sports therapist ready to work across a dynamic and growing industry.

    Academic year

    The course operates on a modular basis that provides flexibility and choice. Our modules are 20 or 40 academic credits.  Each credit taken equates to a total study time of around 10 hours. Total study time includes scheduled teaching, independent study and assessment activity. Full-time students take modules worth 60 credits per semester, with part-time students taking proportionately fewer credits per semester. All students take a total of 120 credits per level and 360 credits for the degree as a whole. Your overall grade for the course and your degree classification are based on the marks obtained for modules taken at levels 5 and 6.  The full-time course has one start point in September.

    Undergraduate

    Undergraduate (bachelors) degrees

    To apply for an undergraduate (bachelors) degree you need one of the following qualifications:

    • Community College Diploma / Associate Degree with a minimum grade GPA of 2.5
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with 28 points overall
    • Successful completion of a relevant International Foundation Year from a recognised UK Institution

    Integrated masters and two-year accelerated degrees

    To apply for an integrated masters or two-year accelerated degree you need one of the following qualifications:

    •  Community College Diploma / Associate Degree with a minimum grade of 2.8
    • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with 30 points overall
    • Successful completion of a relevant International Foundation Year from a recognised UK Institution

    English Program Requirements

    The majority of our undergraduate bachelor degree courses require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0, with 5.5 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. However, we also accept a wide range of qualifications from around the world. The following qualifications are acceptable for most of our Bachelor degree courses.

    Once graduated you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions which allows you to enter careers with clients such as; amateur and elite sports personnel, geriatric and paediatric patients and individuals with non-communicable diseases.

    There are a number of career paths you could pursue, these include but are not limited to;
