    About

Due to Covid-19, a face-to-face learning experience is not possible this year. In 2021, we offer our Summer@Uni-Mainz online. For 2022, we are planning our Summer@Uni-Mainz face-to-face in Mainz. The International German Language School consists of foreign language courses and is complemented by a cultural programme. A wide variety of interdisciplinary lectures and workshops ensures that students can broaden their horizons in many different academic areas. The International German Language School consequently welcomes students of all disciplines and origins. Three cities, two rivers, one "Summer@Uni-Mainz"! The Rhine-Main area has been of great historical significance for European history throughout many centuries. As a city that has been the centre stage for many historical events, Mainz has numerous sights and attractions that make living here a one-of-a-kind experience. As the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz is a vibrant and lively cultural hub in the heart of Germany. The Rhine River separates Mainz from Wiesbaden, the state capital of Hesse, and Frankfurt am Main can be reached by train within a few minutes. At the same time, the Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is only a short train ride away. These geographical locations also correspond to the three German authors who we will focus on in the cultural studies courses of this year’s summer school programme: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Anna Seghers, and Heinrich Heine. These authors not only lived and worked here but also immortalised these places in their novels and poems. It only seems fitting to discover their work and the places they wrote about at the same time. We will make history come alive by tracing their steps and understanding the cultural contexts that shaped these authors’ texts.
