About the course The UWA Doctor of Medicine (MD) aims to produce graduates committed to the wellbeing of the patient, community and society as responsible, accountable, scholarly, capable and caring doctors. This course prepares graduates with the clinical and professional attributes required for successful internships and future training. The Doctor of Medicine is accredited by the Australian Medical Council. In the first year of the MD program, you’ll gain necessary background knowledge in biomedical sciences. In years two and three, students have clinical attachments in the wards and clinics of the hospitals of Perth, general practices and other community settings. The final year commences with an opportunity to experience an overseas elective, and continues with clinical attachments and a Selective option. During this time, students complete their Scholarly Activity stream, e-Portfolio and Procedural Skills Logbook. Year 4 concludes with a Preparation for Internship block which includes an Extension option in a clinical area of their choice, and an intern-shadowing block to ensure graduates are ready for work as interns. PLACES Curriculum The future doctor will need to fulfil a number of roles including that of a professional, leader, advocate, clinician, educator and scholar, and these key roles form the themes around which the UWA MD curriculum is structured. Scholarly Activity Program In year 3, all UWA MD students choose a Scholarly Activity Program that continues into year 4. The choices include a research stream, a community-based service learning stream, or coursework streams in public health or health professions education. Rural Clinical School In year 3, 25% of UWA MD students undertake their studies in a Western Australian rural setting, being places in hospitals and general practices from Esperance to Kununurra. Rural students complete the same curriculum as the urban students, but in a longitudinal and integrated clinical setting.

Entry Requirements
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL LEAVER School leaver entry to Medicine for international students International school leavers may apply direct via UWA's online application system, or via an authorised international education agent. Entry into this course is a competitive process based on ATAR or equivalent, ISAT score and an interview process. Successful applicants will receive a conditional place in the Doctor of Medicine (MD). An International school leaver place in the MD is conditional upon successful completion of a UWA's Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) with the Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practices major, and achieving a minimum selection GPA of 5.5 within the first two years of the Bachelor's degree. The Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice major provides one year of credit towards the MD, allowing completion of both degrees in six years of full time study. Application process and timelines Applications open on 1 January and close on 30 June the year prior to course commencement. Use your name as it appears on your passport when submitting your application and when registering for the ISAT. To be considered you must register for and sit the ISAT such that your result will be available prior to the application closing date. Please refer to further information below regarding ISAT. If your final results will not be available by the application closing date you must submit a Predicted ATAR form (fillable RTF 908KB). Applications are via UWA’s online application portal (see instructions below). International students may also apply via an authorised international education agent. To apply for international school leaver entry into Medicine: Go to the application portal (agents use the agent portal). Select the Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised). On the Course Details tab you will be asked four pathway questions. For question one, choose Doctor of Medicine. The next three questions allow you to select your second, third and fourth preferences. For each question choose from Doctor of Dental Medicine, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, or the Medical Science major for the Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) as a standalone degree. You can also indicate that you do not wish to be considered for any of the other options. Complete and submit your application by following the remaining prompts. Late applications will not be considered. Interview period Interview ranking and notification regarding interview shortlisting will take place after the application closing date.. Interviews for international school leaver applicants will be held during late July and early August in Perth, specified overseas locations, and online (venues subject to availability). Shortlisted candidates will be provided with information regarding overseas interview locations after the application closing date. Course offers, commencement and deferral Course offers will commence in August and will continue on a rolling basis until all places are filled. Applicants who attain a school leaver place in Medicine will commence in the Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) in Semester 1 (late February). Applicants who are offered an International school leaver place in Medicine may defer commencement for one year. Students who are required to fulfil a national service obligation may defer for up to two years. Minimum ATAR or equivalent International school leaver applicants require a minimum ATAR of 98 (or equivalent). Applicants who have completed studies other than ATAR will have their final results converted, for example: UWAFP (UWA College) 86 WAUFP 85 International Baccalaureate 40 All India Senior School Certificate 19 GCE or Cambridge Advanced Level Examination 15 Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level 14.5 Information regarding equivalency for other qualifications can be found here: international and overseas qualifications. Applicants who will not have their final results by the application closing date can apply based on a predicted result provided by their school. Course offers will be conditional on the actual result being consistent with the predicted result. International school leaver status Assured Pathways are exclusive to school leaver applicants, that is, in progress of Australian year 12 or equivalent, on a gap year, or undertaking a national service obligation directly following school completion, and have not commenced in university studies or vocational training at AQF diploma level or above. You are an international applicant if you do not hold Australian or New Zealand Citizenship, or Australian Permanent Residency. Australian Citizens who hold dual citizenship must apply for a domestic place. You must not have commenced tertiary studies, including university degree studies or vocational training at diploma level or above. Students who commence in the first semester of tertiary studies while awaiting an offer must withdraw from studies prior to academic census at their home institution to retain their school leaver eligibility (that is, withdraw without academic penalty such that no results appear on the transcript including Fails). Applicants who have commenced in tertiary studies may work towards an application for Graduate Entry. Contact Admissions if you have any doubt as to whether a proposed course of action will impact your eligibility. International Student Admissions Test (ISAT) International students who plan to apply for an Assured Pathway to the MD must provide a valid ISAT result by the application closing date. For 2026 commencement, ISAT scores will be accepted from tests sat during 2023, 2024, and 2025 test windows 1 and 2. Results from later 2025 test windows cannot be accepted in support of applications for 2026 commencement. The test can be sat only once within a 12-month period. If you have more than one valid result, the higher score will be used (not necessarily the most recent score). Your ISAT registration number must be provided with your application. To be eligible for consideration, your ISAT score must meet or exceed the 25th percentile in both sections of the test: Critical reasoning and Quantitative reasoning. When registering for ISAT, use your name as shown on your passport. This will ensure that UWA can verify your ISAT result. Refer to ISAT information provided by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) including preparation strategies, registration, test dates and test venues. The test measures skills acquired over a period of time rather than particular subject knowledge. It is recommended to prepare for ISAT using the sample questions provided on the official ISAT website. Reading widely and engaging critically with written material will also help to improve speed of reading comprehension and analytical skills. UWA does not endorse third party preparation courses, including those held on University premises. UCAT ANZ test results are not accepted for applications to the International Assured Pathway to the Doctor of Medicine. Final ranking Final ranking will be based on ATAR or equivalent (30%), interview (50%) and ISAT score (20%) Prerequisite and recommended subjects Assured Pathway students must undertake the Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) with the Integrated Medical Sciences and Clinical Practice major before commencing the MD. School leavers must meet UWA's English language requirements for undergraduate entry. The following ATAR or equivalent subjects are recommended, or may be taken as Level 1 university units: Chemistry Maths Applications or higher Students who have not undertaken prerequisite ATAR or equivalent subjects are able to undertake bridging units as part of their bachelor’s degree studies.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT English competency English is the language of instruction and assessment at UWA and you will need to meet the English language requirements of the University to be eligible for a place. Graduate applicants require at least two successful years of full-time or equivalent degree studies undertaken in Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America. Career Pathways
For registration as a medical practitioner in Australia, all graduates are required to complete a 12-month pre-registration internship in an approved clinical setting. Priority for internships is given to all Australian citizens and permanent residents. At present international graduates are only accommodated if sufficient intern places are available.Following graduation from the MD, further studies can be undertaken with a professional college for specialisation in a medical discipline, such as anaesthesia, obstetrics or psychiatry.
