The School of Library Service (SLS) was created in 1969. The first MLS (Master of Library Service) degree was awarded at Dalhousie University's May 1971 Convocation.
From 1979 to 1985 the School undertook a complete revision. The name of the school and the degree were changed to reflect the new curriculum with its integration of librarianship and information studies. The school became the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), and the first MLIS (Master of Library and Information Studies) degrees were awarded in May 1987.
In 2001, the school entered the planning process for a new Faculty of Management (FoM) Building. In 2005, School Council voted unanimously to request a name change to the School of Information Management (SIM) to better reflect its broad mandate and FoM setting.
In 2019, after comprehensive deliberation, SIM changed the name of our MLIS to Master of Information (MI). This change was motivated by the desire to reflect more accurately the content of the program, our program goals, and to be more inclusive of the possible career options. This new name reflects a transitional profession, and the new emerging workplace opportunities centered around digital transformation, data, community engagement and human centred design. It also mirrors changes in similar programs across North America.
In 2023, the Faculty of Management (FoM) restructured, and the School of Information Management (SIM) became the Department of Information Science (DIS). Program staff transitioned into a brand-new Graduate Student Services (GSS) centre, which is a resource and support hub for all graduate students in FoM. We are proud to collaborate with our grad program colleagues to provide students with the best possible experience while studying here.
In 2025, we launched a new program - the PhD in Information.
Our degree (under all names) has been continuously accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) since 1971.

"I do not want to follow a traditional path. I want to be an active member of any space I’m in, be a part of decision-making, and make people think about new perspectives."
