    The minor in Linguistics is intended for students interested in the interdisciplinary study of language. An understanding of the structure of language will improve students’ communication skills and intercultural competence. The minor will be of interest to students wishing to do graduate work in speech pathology or audiology, and complements many majors, including modern or ancient languages, psychology, anthropology or computer science. Linguistics may be taken as a minor in the Honours program. Students in Linguistics will be advised in the School of Languages and Literatures.

    Learning Outcomes

    A student who completes the Linguistics Minor at the University of Guelph will be able to:

    Community Engagement and Global Understanding

    • Analyze and describe how language changes and what factors influence such changes.
    • Demonstrate intercultural awareness and competence in the context of language acquisition, language variation and change.

    Critical and Creative Thinking

    • Appraise popular beliefs and language myths to determine their validity.

    Literacy and Communication

    • Analyze and articulate themes about the nature of human language, and how languages work.
    • Demonstrate a basic ability in a language other than English.

    Evaluate and Conduct Research

    • Identify and analyze language patterns, draw generalizations from a set of data, and formulate hypotheses to explain those patterns.
    • Devise empirical studies that employ linguistic methods and tools.

    Depth and Breadth of Understanding

    • Analyze how language varies across speakers, regions, and over time.
    • Debate the current state of knowledge in the discipline of linguistics.

    Professional Development and Ethical Behaviour

    • Exemplify and apply linguistic methods and tools.
    • Construct research projects that respect disciplinary ethical norms and practices.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Applicants from Bahrain, Jordan, Palestine, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen must present the National Secondary School Education/Leaving Certificate (Tawjihiyah) with very good/excellent results overall and in appropriate subjects.

    Students from Kuwait should present the Shahad-al-thanawia-al-a-a'ama (General Secondary School Certificate) with excellent results and those from UAE, the Secondary School Certificate (Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-Amma). See UAE for more details. Documents must be official and come from the school, Ministry or the appropriate Cultural Bureau.

    English Program Requirements

    Advanced Level of the English Language Certificate Program (ELCP): Successful completion of the University of Guelph’s Open Learning Advanced Level of the English Language Certificate Program (ELCP) (levels 9 and 10) is also considered an acceptable form of testing for English proficiency.

    Cambridge English: C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency: Minimum overall score of 176 with no band less than 169.

    Canadian Academic English (CAEL): Paper and Computer-based: Language Assessment Minimum overall band score of 70.

    Duolingo English Test: Minimum overall score of 110. Individual subscores may be considered.

    International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS - Academic): Paper and Computer-based: Minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.

    Pearson Test of English (PTE): Minimum overall score of 60 with no score less than 60 in the individual components.

    Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): For both internet-based and home-edition tests: Minimum total score of 89 with no individual scaled score less than 21. Effective January 21, 2026: Minimum overall score of 4.5.
