    About

Join a community focused on scientific discovery with our thesis-based Master of Science and Doctoral programs in chemistry and biochemistry. Both degree programs involve coursework and research under the supervision of a faculty member.

As a U of R graduate student, you will receive a variety of hands-on experiences in laboratories and research labs that cover broad areas of chemistry and biochemistry ranging from fundamentals in your fields of study, to applied experiences in environmental areas and industrial areas, as well as disciplines related to medicine.

You’ll work closely with prominent researchers and learn in world-class facilities in the following fields:

    • Analytical/physical chemistry including nuclear magnetic resonance and chromatography-mass spectrometry
    • Biophysics of biological interfaces
    • Chemogenomics
    • Enzymology/chemical biology
    • Environmental chemistry
    • Inorganic/organometallic chemistry
    • Proteomics and bioinformatics
    • Supramolecular organic photochemistry and photophysics
    • Synthetic organic chemistry
    • Theoretical/computational chemistry

Prepare for a future with strong job prospects. Chemists and Biochemists are in high demand in areas such as chemical manufacturing, federal and provincial government departments, laboratories for the protection of health and the environment, as well as testing a wide range of chemical and food products across the manufacturing industry.

Learn from the best! Chemistry is one of only six subjects taught since the University of Regina began as Regina College in 1911.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Doctoral Degree

Normally, applicants must have obtained a thesis-based Master's degree in the discipline to qualify as a doctoral student. Applicants must have academic credentials consistent with being fully-qualified to undertake graduate work at the doctoral level. The categories of probationary or qualifying student do not apply at the doctoral level. An applicant who does not have sufficient background training or courses prerequisite to scholarly work in the particular subject of study and research will not be admitted as a doctoral student. An applicant may be admitted as a Master's student and be required to undertake specific courses toward establishing appropriate credentials, but any graduate study undertaken for this purpose cannot be counted as time spent toward formal requirements for the degree. Alternatively, an applicant may be accepted at the Master's level as a means of illustrating suitability to enter a doctoral program, and after the first year may request, through the academic unit, a transfer to a PhD program. A comprehensive examination or equivalent is not a formal requirement of FGSR, but may be required by individual academic units.

    English Program Requirements

English Proficiency Tests. International applicants, except those who attended universities where the language of instruction was English, must submit proof of English proficiency, usually in the form of recognized tests with the exception of applications to French language programs in La Cité universitaire francophone. The most common is TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Applicants must have a TOEFL score of at least 4 Internet-based, except as noted below. FGSR accepts the following tests:

TOEFL iBT : 4 each band

    IELTS : 6.5 overall,6.0 each

    PTE : 59

Duolingo: 125 overall, 120 each for Speaking, Writing, and Reading, 115 for Listening

    Career

What Can You Do with a Chemistry or Biochemistry Degree?

Upon successfully completing their programs, our graduates have gone on to a wide range of careers. Some have stayed in academia as postdoctoral fellows, lab instructors, lecturers, and Chemistry or Biochemistry professors in North America and Asia. Others pursue professional programs such as medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and optometry. Graduates have also pursued careers as research scientists at international companies including IntelliSyn, Quantiam Technologies, K+S Potash Canada, Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, and Septodont, as well as at public agencies including the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory, the Saskatchewan Health Authority, and the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The jobs graduates go on to include:

    • Chemist
    • Biochemist
    • Research scientist
    • Lab technologist
    • Lab manager
    • Development chemist
    • Food safety manager
    • Clinical research coordinator
