About Master of Sociology

The Master of Arts in Sociology has its focus on research and is designed to both deepen and broaden the knowledge and skills necessary to analyse social behaviour and to apply the empirical research methods acquired during the Bachelor of Arts. Another focus is the cooperative context or teaching and learning as can be seen from the majority of seminars over lectures. A research project prepares for the writing of the Masters thesis. Students have the choice of specialising in one of three focal areas of sociology and to participate in a research colloquium. The overall goal is to lay the groundwork for students to follow an academic or professional career in the field of sociology.

Admittance to the Master of Arts programme requires that students must have already completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in the same area, or possess an equivalent degree. You must pass the “Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang” (DSH-2) as evidence that your spoken and written command of the German language is adequate for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes for which the language of instruction is German.

Participating in the DSH at the Studienkolleg is subject to charge.

Career Opportunities after Completing Master of Sociology

Graduates of the Master of Arts programme Sports Management occupy positions that are located at the interface of the disciplines of law and economics, psychology, and sports science (sports theory and sports practice) or pertain directly to Sports Management. The graduates can find employment in, for instance, mid or high-level management positions. These are positions in the areas of, for example, project management, sponsoring consulting, product management, marketing management or in the field of sports administration (particularly in associations). Typical employers include tourism companies, various agencies (e.g. marketing agencies, event agencies), media, universities, clubs and associations, sporting goods manufacturers, health and fitness companies, business consultancies and various industrial companies as well as the public sector (e.g. sports offices). There, graduates occupy various positions at the middle or higher management level, such as positions in the areas of project management, sponsoring consulting, product management, marketing management and sports direction. For this reason it is important to start early in the degree programme to gain practical work experience in relevant organisations. In this way students can promote themselves as competent professionals in practice and make important professional contacts. The likelihood of finding a good position is definitely heightened if the student is flexible when it comes to commuting or even moving abroad.
