About Master of Pharmacy

Pharmacy is the science of medicinal products. The study programme focuses on the effectiveness, development, production, testing, storage, dispensing, and risk assessment of medicinal products, as well as information and counselling on medicinal products and in the field of health care. In addition, legal and clinical aspects are taught. Both the training and the practice of the profession of pharmacist are regulated by the Approbationsordnung für Apotheker (Licensing Regulations for Pharmacists, AAppO). The university degree leads to a state examination, in Jena also to a diploma for those interested in research. The study programme includes the five major areas of pharmaceutical/medical chemistry, pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical technology / biopharmacy, pharmacology/toxicology, and clinical pharmacy. The university programme is divided into two study sections (each lasting two years), followed by a twelve-month professional internship, at least half of which you must complete in a public pharmacy. The practical training and thus the entire training to become a pharmacist is completed when you pass the third section of the Pharmaceutical Examination. After successfully completing your studies, you can apply for a licence to practise as a pharmacist, i.e. a state licence to practise in pharmacies. It is valid throughout Germany and is recognized within the EU.
