About Bachelor of HighRR - High Resolution and High Rate Detectors in Nuclear and Particle Physics Research Training Group

The HighRR Research Training Group qualification and course programme provides education and training focused on detector science and detector technology. It complements other Heidelberg graduate programmes, in particular, that of the HGSFP, the Heidelberg Graduate School on Fundamental Physics. The HighRR Research Training Group is dedicated to research and development of high-precision particle detection systems. Its goal is to optimally support young and talented detector physicists in their research work and prepare them for both industry and academia. The HighRR qualification and course programme comprises a wealth of different training elements, including a start-up packet with courses on electronics and precision-mechanics, introductory and advanced lectures about a multitude of topics related to detector physics, a dedicated lecture week organised once per year, special hands-on courses, and a special HighRR seminar. The HighRR fills a gap left open by most of the structured PhD programmes (also those available in Heidelberg) that concern nuclear and particle physics and that focus more on analyses and fundamental physics topics. This programme brings together PhD students working on different aspects of detector design and supports their research, knowledge exchange, and training. The HighRR Research Training Group supports research and provides training in the following four areas: detector technology and system integration, trigger and data acquisition, electronics and sensor development, and detector simulation and reconstruction.

Entry Requirements

In order to be eligible for doctoral studies at Heidelberg University, applicants should hold a Master of Science or an equivalent degree in Physics. A Master's thesis is expected. Grades obtained for previous degrees must correspond to a B+ or better. Applicants who have not written a Master's thesis may still be accepted if they can prove their ability to carry out independent research projects. Other students who have a four-year degree in physics (e.g., a four-year Bachelor's degree, a three-year Bachelor's degree plus a one year Honours degree) also have the possibility to apply for admission to HighRR and HGSFP for doctoral study via the 4+4 programme. Admission may be granted to candidates displaying exceptional grades and ability.
