About Power Engineering (Bachelor of Science)

Students receive a broad, scientifically grounded education that includes practical aspects. The four-semester foundation stage focuses mainly on basic subjects in mathematics, science and engineering. It also includes eight weeks of basic practical training, which should be completed before embarking on the programme. As early as the first semester, students gain an insight into the broad spectrum of power engineering. Practical project work and construction projects conclude the foundation course. Over the next semesters, students take an interdisciplinary range of courses from the areas of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, electrical drive engineering and power electronics. Non-technical courses such as energy law and energy industry, and courses from the Studium Generale complete the curriculum. The sixth semester is set aside for the Bachelors thesis, which can be supervised by an institute of power engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science or by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Students of Power Engineering should possess strong powers of imagination and abstraction. It is also important that they have a technical flair, an interest in mathematics, and a logical, pragmatic and realistic way of thinking. Good foreign language skills are very important for entering the job market. Solid English language skills are therefore advantageous.

The programme involves eight weeks of basic internship, which prospective students are strongly recommended to complete before embarking on the degree programme. No specific time is set aside for completing this basic practical training during the degree programme.

If you did not graduate from a German school nor have a German higher education entrance qualification (for example, the Abitur), a language certificate proving your knowledge of German is required for the application and enrollment.

At the end of the online application, you will automatically be forwarded to a cover letter (the so-called application for enrollment). Sign this application for enrollment (handwritten or digital) and put it together with the required documents into one PDF document, which you can then upload using the upload link provided. The required documents include your qualification for admission to higher education (e.g. Abitur) and any other supporting documents such as practical training certificates or evidence of language proficiency. We also need proof of your health insurance and evidence that you have paid the semester fee.
