German Studies involves studying compulsory modules and compulsory elective modules worth a total of 30 credit points. Students embark on the subject of German Studies in the 1st semester via the compulsory module Linguistic Analysis, which comprises a lecture and a specialisation seminar. In the 2nd semester, students take the compulsory module Forms and Aspects of Childrens and Youth Literature. From the 2nd semester, students start taking compulsory elective modules. At this point, they decide whether they wish to pursue Competence Area A or Competence Area B. Competence Area A comprises module D S Teaching Special Needs Education, S 6 Language Acquisition and Psychology of Language and S 7 Theory and Practice of German as a Foreign and Second Language, and as the Language of Education. Module D S is a compulsory module in Competence Area A; in addition, students choose freely between modules S 6 and S 7. Competence Area B comprises the module Language and Literature Teaching for Heterogeneous Learning Groups and the module German as a Second Language and as the Language of Education in Culturally Diverse Contexts. Both modules must be taken within Competence Area B.
