About History (Master of Arts)

The modules offered in the Masters degree programme, which can be combined in many ways, enable students to explore key academic debates and issues in their relevant areas of specialisation on the basis of theories, source analysis and the reading of historical specialist literature. From the first to the third semester, seminars and accompanying research or reading courses give students the opportunity to discuss research literature and methodologies, to operationalise their own issues and to develop hypotheses in the context of seminar papers. Students practice giving professional oral and written presentations, and receive detailed feedback, which they then implement in the fourth semester, which is set aside for writing and defending their Masters thesis. Lecturers advise students on the choice and coordination of their specialisations, and help them to decide whether they wish to pursue one of the areas of professional skills development in Germany or abroad. Students should have an enquiring mind with the wish to learn about the having-become of familiar and unknown worlds; they should enjoy reading, researching and getting to the bottom of complex issues, and should be interested in the political and economic dimension of contemporary and past societies. Good foreign language skills are also useful (depending on the chosen specialisation) as well as an enjoyment in preparing knowledge for oral or written presentation to others, possibly with the use of media.

How to Apply for History (Master of Arts) at Leibniz University Hannover

You can use our online application portal to enrol any time between 1 June and 30 September. To be able to do this, you will need a qualification for admission to higher education. At the end of the online application, you will automatically be forwarded to a cover letter (the so-called application for enrollment). Sign this application for enrollment (handwritten or digital) and put it together with the required documents into one PDF document, which you can then upload using the upload link provided. The required documents include your qualification for admission to higher education (e.g. Abitur) and any other supporting documents such as practical training certificates or evidence of language proficiency. We also need proof of your health insurance and evidence that you have paid the semester fee. At the end of the online application, all required documents are listed and must be uploaded as a scan of the original documents by September 30th, 11:59 p.m. Please do not forget to upload your photo for the LeibnizCard . You can find information on this in the application for enrollment at the end of the online application. In September, you will receive your enrolment documents, an invitation to the welcome event for new students and information about any preparatory courses that may be offered. Please note that some degree programmes offer preparatory courses well before term starts.
