Optical technologies summarise these applications and exploit the extraordinary properties of light across the entire range of scientific/technical possibilities. As a cross-cutting technology, optical technologies act as a driver of innovation in modern industry, and facilitate significant developments, such as in mechanical and automotive engineering, microelectronics and optoelectronics, lighting engineering as well as the pharmaceutical and medical devices industry. The aim of the Masters degree programme is to train specialists and executives for the entire optical industry. Hannover is an ideal location for studying Optical Technologies because engineering and scientific research cooperate closely here. In addition, the Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH) and the Hannover Centre for Optical Technologies (HOT) provide an interface to industry, seeking to involve companies in current research and teaching and to introduce students to industry. Cooperation between the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering enables the Masters degree programme to build a bridge between basic research in physics and technical application.

Students require a profound knowledge of scientific and technical principles of physics and mathematics, as taught in science or engineering degrees at the Bachelorâ€™s stage. Students wishing to complete this degree programme require the ability to think in an abstract, logical and precise way, and to recognise structures and create models. In addition, students require a knowledge of the English language in order to be able to understand the technical and scientific specialist literature.

How to Apply for Optical Technologies (Master of Science) at Leibniz University Hannover

You can use our online application portal to enrol any time between 1 June and 30 September. To be able to do this, you will need a qualification for admission to higher education. At the end of the online application, you will automatically be forwarded to a cover letter (the so-called application for enrollment). Sign this application for enrollment (handwritten or digital) and put it together with the required documents into one PDF document, which you can then upload using the upload link provided. The required documents include your qualification for admission to higher education (e.g. Abitur) and any other supporting documents such as practical training certificates or evidence of language proficiency. We also need proof of your health insurance and evidence that you have paid the semester fee. At the end of the online application, all required documents are listed and must be uploaded as a scan of the original documents by September 30th, 11:59 p.m. Please do not forget to upload your photo for the LeibnizCard . You can find information on this in the application for enrollment at the end of the online application. In September, you will receive your enrolment documents, an invitation to the welcome event for new students and information about any preparatory courses that may be offered. Please note that some degree programmes offer preparatory courses well before term starts.
