About Philosophy of Science (Master of Arts)

The degree programme offers participants targeted specializations in different areas of philosophy of science, ethics and political philosophy as well as epistemology and metaphysics. In addition, philosophical core competencies (e.g., research and presentation skills) are also taught, and students are introduced to cutting-edge research topics. This programme is suited to students who have completed their undergraduate studies in philosophy or a closely related subject (whether as a major or a minor), and wish to expand and deepen their philosophical education, with a special focus on questions in philosophy of science.

Admission Requirements

An undergraduate degree in a related field of study, such as

Philosophy as subject in the Interdisciplinary Bachelorâ€™s Degree Programme (Bachelor of Arts)

Or a Bachelorâ€™s degree or equivalent qualification at a German university or a foreign university belonging to the Bologna signatory states in philosophy or in another relevant undergraduate degree, or in an academic discipline relevant for the Masterâ€™s degree programme Philosophy of Science (including physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, mathematics, political science, sociology, psychology, historiography or economics).

The selection committee shall decide whether a degree programme or related academic discipline is suitable; the decision may be accompanied by the condition that missing modules or courses must be completed within two semesters.

For master's degree programmes with unrestricted admission, all applicants who fulfil the admission requirements will be admitted a university place. The exact admission requirements can be found in the admission regulations:

How to Apply for Philosophy of Science (Master of Arts) at Leibniz University Hannover

You can use our online application portal to enrol any time between 1 June and 30 September. To be able to do this, you will need a qualification for admission to higher education. At the end of the online application, you will automatically be forwarded to a cover letter (the so-called application for enrollment). Sign this application for enrollment (handwritten or digital) and put it together with the required documents into one PDF document, which you can then upload using the upload link provided. The required documents include your qualification for admission to higher education (e.g. Abitur) and any other supporting documents such as practical training certificates or evidence of language proficiency. We also need proof of your health insurance and evidence that you have paid the semester fee. At the end of the online application, all required documents are listed and must be uploaded as a scan of the original documents by September 30th, 11:59 p.m. Please do not forget to upload your photo for the LeibnizCard . You can find information on this in the application for enrollment at the end of the online application. In September, you will receive your enrolment documents, an invitation to the welcome event for new students and information about any preparatory courses that may be offered. Please note that some degree programmes offer preparatory courses well before term starts.
