The Linguistics masters programme builds on the BA programme in the same field and focuses more strongly on research. In particular, it equips students with in-depth knowledge in the three areas of grammatical theory (phonology, morphology, syntax), linguistic typology and computational/experimental approaches to grammar. The programme consists of different tracks, allowing students to specialise in the natural or social sciences depending on their previous education.

Requirements and Admission Criteria for Linguistics MA at Leipzig University

Entry Requirements

General qualification for the study programme is proven by a first academic degree or by a degree from a state or state-recognised university of cooperative education.
Successful completion of a BA programme in general linguistics. Graduates of other courses can be admitted with the approval of the examination board. When commencing the programme, students must demonstrate knowledge of English at B2 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and of another foreign language at B1 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) by providing their Abitur certificate or passing an entrance examination at a university or a state-recognised educational institution.
Knowledge of English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
knowledge of a further foreign language at B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The Faculty of Philology will check whether the above requirements have been met and then issue an official notification. This serves as proof that the candidate meets the relevant admission requirements.

How to Apply for Linguistics MA at Leipzig University

1. Checking your documents

If you wish to participate in the German course to prepare for studying, you will need to have what is known as a“direct”higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB),i.e.one that is valid for German universities.

Please check in the databasewhether your school and university certificates entitle you to study in Germany.

Do you meet the requirements for the German course and does your previous education mean that you have a direct HZB? Then apply for the German course!

2. Confirmation document

Refugees may only apply free of charge to the German course to prepare for studying if they have a document confirming that they have sought advice. This is called a Beratungsbestätigung. In order to apply, please emailus a scan of your residence title and indicate which degree programmeyou would like to study. Please note that we cannot accept any responsibility for personal documents you send to us by email. Alternatively, you can also send us a copy of your documents by post. We will then send you a personalised confirmation document, which you will need to upload when you apply.

3. Apply through uni-assist

4. Admission and entrance test

Once uni-assist has successfully checked your documents, you will receive a letter of admission forthe German course from mid-August 2021. This will be sent to you via the AlmaWeb study portal. When you have been admitted, you can expect to be invited to an entrance test in September. The course starts in October 2021.
